The Conservative Party

The parody accounts are savage.

BBC just had a water boss on with the usual appalling attempts to excuse the failure to stop leaks - "we have a plan to do it by 2050" - that's nearly 30 years to not do anything while raking in vast amounts.

More than 30 years
They were privatised by the Thatcher govt. in the 1980s with the excuse that they needed private investment to replace leaking pipes and Victorian sewerage systems.
That went as well as expected then.

Yes, I don't know when they started the plan, but 30 years from now sounds a lot to me. There is no way that a 30-year plan will survive to the end, just like the other long plans put in place to convince the public that something is happening.

It may be a ‘long’ plan but at least it is a plan unlike this government which has absolutely no plans at all.

Whether you agree with nationalised industries or not the privatisation of our utilities was a clusterfuck from beginning to end and we continue to reap the consequences to this day. Unless you consider ideological victories and undermining your own nation state as wins, in which case it went quite well.

And of course ideological victories undermining your own nation state was the underpinning of brexit.
The greatest clusterfuck of all time.

The sovereign individual is free from commitments or obligations to nations state... they rise far above clouds surveying the work of the mere mortals below.

Someone on the radio the other day said we have Victorian sewage systems in the same way that we have roman roads. The technology and ability to modernise the system has been around for decades. It gets done in part but as we have private companies doing it the minimum level of cost/effort is put in.

The fact that it hasn't been modernised creates many of the flooding problems we have today... builders sling up a big estate and eventually the water ends up in a victorian pipe system designed to handle far fewer houses and individuals.

Exactly. Proper planning would insist on the infrastructure being brought up to the extra capacity required first.

Exactly this. They are too busy counting profits and dividends.
It reminds me of the train companies who refused to install the advanced train protection systems because it was cheaper to pay compensation for death and injury caused in train crashes than it was to take steps to prevent them.
I suspect it’s cheaper for the water companies to pay the fines for polluting rivers with human shit and to supply bottled water, than it is to actually fix leaks.

I've said before that Truss will spend two years enacting punishment bills which will cause so much damage that it will impossible for Labour to reverse them.
So if you're a lower income family on say £25k just how much tax cut would you have to get to break even when your energy bill doubles or trebles?

Liz Truss has defended earnings at energy companies amid soaring price rises, saying profits should not be considered "dirty and evil".

The Tory leadership hopeful said windfall taxes on profits - urged by some to fund help for households - were about "bashing business".

She said cutting taxes was the best way to help with living costs over winter.

Liz Truss - brainless, deluded and power-mad

This has been standard practice for this govt.
They only ever talk about the aims they have (or don’t actually have) but never do they actually spell out a plan or route as to how to achieve them. And they particularly will not talk about how much anything will cost.
The expression ‘talk is cheap’ has never been more apt.
But then this is a government full of cheap grifters.
Designed to make the people believe something is being done.
All that's happening is an initial meeting and then a junior civil servant is tasked with a piece of research and prepare a report.
A report that goes nowhere and does nothing until someone asks for progress and they reply it is being investigated.
Especially if the results say an unpopular outcome is inevitable.

An example from this week's meeting...

The Chancellor and energy firms agreed to work closely over the coming weeks to ensure that the public, including vulnerable customers, are supported as unprecedented global events drive higher energy costs.

(Keep kicking the can and commit to nothing effective)

As set out in the Energy Security Strategy, the Government has launched a consultation to drive forward market reforms and ensure the market works better for consumers. Discussion focussed on how Government and industry can collectively drive forward reforms to ensure the market delivers lower prices.

(Market reforms ... It's somebody else's fault and responsibility to actually do something ... As long as it doesn't upset the providers)

If you are on minimum wage and don’t pay tax how is that going to help?

The line about profits was just strange - absolutely nobody is against businesses making a profit.
