I remember a story about Shankley. He was giving his team talk before a fixture vs the rags.I am old enough to remember Mercer, Busby and Shankley. These guys came over as gentlemen in public but they were all hard men (even Uncle Joe) and would stand absolutely no messing from any player. Where they differed from the GPC was that they were sportsmen. They liked to win, but if their team got stuffed they would admit the other team were better on the day. They definitely did not slag off and take the piss out of other teams. They gave respect and consequently were respected.
The GPC will never be respected by me as he was and is a cnut. It's as simple as that. I don't give a shite what he achieved, he's not a quarter of the men Mercer, Busby or Shankley were.
”Look boys, this is a tough fixture. They have got Charlton, the best player in England; Best so tricky and Law who can score any time. They are a very good team. So just go out and smash them.”
Result: Liverpool 3:: Rags 0.
I do hope it was true!
