Exactly. It's up to City whether or not they want to compete at the highest level. If they want to, they can match the investment other clubs and leagues are putting into the game. And if they don't want to match that investment then they won't be retaining their top players or attracting anyone decent to replace them. It's odd to me that just as the women's game is gaining a lot of momemtum we seem to be tapping out.
This is it. I don't see much difference in our investment levels now compared to four or five years ago but it doesn't go as far. Chelsea and Arsenal have pushed on massively and reinvented themselves to try and be the best, where we've just settled with a squad that's there abouts and coaches who don't rock the boat. Cushing wouldn't have lasted as long as he did at a top club and Taylor wouldn't even have got a look in.

The fact there's a post-Euros buzz just as we're starting to see the results of it all just makes it even worse.

I saw a lot of city fans whingeing that we weren't getting enough credit for our contribution to England's performances at the euros, but most of the City players in that squad weren't developed by us.
Even Keira Walsh only joined us at 17! We've been really good at giving youngsters a chance but it's funny how many of them have spent most of their youth careers elsewhere.

Agreed, but timing now seems odd, after playing season begun.
She hadn't returned to training with the other Lionesses due to personal reasons. Those have obviously included assessing her future in the game and has decided now is right for her to call it a day.

I wish her nothing but happiness in her retirement and thank her for her contribution to the club and for her incredible international career. Good luck Ellen with whatever you do next!

Thanks for that context pal, I hadn’t realised and it makes a bit more sense now, reading that.
Yes, kudos aplenty to her for sure.

(We’re not gonna get Steph announcing similar tomorrow though are we?!)

I certainly hope not but with what she (and her partner) are going through it wouldn't totally surprise me.

Happy retirement from a great career, plenty of goals and retire on a high of winning a major competition.

Well done and good luck Ellen - went out on a high. I think unfortunately Keira will be gone - and good luck to her she’s an elite player and if we are honest - in the women’s game she is not at an elite club…. No UCL again, and time will tell but, I honestly can’t see City women winning the league. Our better players are moving to bigger clubs, Hemp and Kelly will be next…. The women‘s set up at City needs a root and branch review - the structure we originally put in place served us well but we are getting left behind - we look slightly amateur and off the pace. I know he’s an easy target but I really cannot fathom why, if the club wants our women‘s outfit to be an elite set up - why you’d appoint or worse stick with Taylor?

More thinking on the timing of Ellen's retirement. The constant calls n the media for her to be dropped in the Euro's certainly wouldn't have helped her frame of mind. Probably sae everyone else getting a barrage of hype and praise while she was doing a lot of the donkey work that get's unnoticed on the pitch so that others could reap the benefits later on in games. Also, looking at the make-up of our squad as well as the Lionesses the age gap between her and her team-mates just keeps getting bigger so maybe feeling a little out of the loop on certain aspects of team-bonding. The fact that we've lost several of our stalwarts and replaced with teenagers and early 20 year-olds just adds to that. Leaving the game now ensures that she goes out on a high rather than facing another slog of a year under Gareth Taylor.

Agree with a lot of this. The one thing I'm left unsure of, is if City had an idea this may have been a possibility for a while. In terms of forwards, we seemed overstocked following the signings of Deyna and Fowler (though i know she started in midfield v Real) - now the numbers maybe seem right.

Found this interesting and relevent...

Also further notes here:

It's the way Chelsea have been playing against us for the last couple of years. Stop Keira Walsh and you force us to go out wide and unless we isolate Hemp with a 1-on-1 it's easier to defend. Would imagine that Weir would've provided inside info on how well that's been working.

I hope this is overly pessimistic. The WSL can't afford to loose City as a powerhouse and I also hope the league will hold on to Keira. Of course the elimination at the weekend was demoralising but the club has to hang together. This is vitally important for WSL fans as much as it is for you City fans.

One of the reasons we looked so good with that three of Mewis-Walsh-Weir the year before last imo, two who could come deep and pick it up, two who could play it forward, two who could carry it forward, and all three comfortable in tight spaces. No matter how we tried to play, we were so much harder to contain in the middle.

There's so much on Walsh and, in theory, Losada for that now.

What does this mean? We need to think positive?

What better time to retire, winning the Euros is the highest highs they can achieve.

They probably think they've won football and are at the appropriate age to focus on there family.

Edited: I said world cup instead of euros initially.
