Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post-Match Thread

Unbeaten and had chances to win, Villa crying for everything all game not the worst result we were by far the better team.

Foden should have come off sick of seeing him on the floor whinging at the ref, Cancelo was ball watching so bad for the goal he should have been cutting out that cross.

Did the ref blow bang on 4 mins after time, sounded like it.

Makes the Dipper decision mid week even more bent.
Villa had a perfectly good winner chalked off. We can’t be moaning about the officials today.

The decision to let go of Sterling and Jesus and give Mahrez a new 3 year deal already looks crazy. God knows how it'll look come the end of the season when those two are scoring 20+ goals for our rivals and Mahrez is stuck on the bench.

That first sub has cost us two points, and that's on Pep.

Feel sorry for Erling - was awesome again. Everyone else, poor.
This completely.

Thought our build up play today was slow, we were flat footed at times… Alvarez should have started ahead of Foden IMO, Walker below par yet again and Rodri had an off day.

The Boys in Blue didn’t give in. They fought to the end. Ok you only half showed ‘em but you didn’t give in. Thank you City, thank you lads, thank you fans.

John Boy must have done ok as he is getting quite a few votes for MOTM!

A poor performance, all things considered. Our passing was very undercooked in the first half. We created enough to win it, though, it's a bit more worrying that we are struggling to keep a clean sheet at the minute. Think the key job now is to find a bit of balance.

I don't know what is wrong with Walker. Cancelo as well had one of those games that he has every five games or so where he looks all over the place.

Made easier by Liverpool's result, and you don't lose the league in September, but we could do with getting some recent on Spurs next week and I'd be very nervous what they can do playing something similar to Villa tonight with much better players.

We are 2 points down on last seasons results, but we haven't lost yet and the tarquins have fun Thursday next week.
That’s not possible as we lost the first game against Spuds last season.
Even if we won the next 5, and I can’t remember, we’re only 1 point down.

Very lacklustre from the first whistle and having got ahead we should have absolutely buried them, but for some reason we start hoofing it forward and just give the ball back to them to have another go at us until they score.

You could see the momentum changing and so I really don’t know why we didn’t try to get some energy into the team with a few subs.

Despite all the coverage about Haaland I really don’t think we’ve started well this season and playing arguably the worst two teams in the league at home in the first few games has given a bit of a false impression.

We need to improve significantly from here.

1. Poor passing, especially in the first half.

2. Poor finishing.

3. Poor subs by Pep. Mahrez for Bernie, okay that's fine to give Mahrez minutes. Ake for Walker to go back 3 is fine, but leaving Foden on when he was playing poor was a bad idea. Should have 100% rewarded Alvarez' performance from last game and get him on, go 3-5-2 to play to our strikers.

4. Pep changing us from the last game was a bad idea, Walker and Cancelo played inverted for so long. What happened to the last game where Cancelo was wide, and Foden played inside. Foden looked so lost staying wide all game.
It’s not. We have a £200k pw player who on merit doesn’t get anywhere near this fucking side. He should have been shipped out in the summer. Instead he gets a new contract and now we end up in situations like today.

Honestly, the collective wank-off on here when he got a new contract baffled the fuck out of me.

Love him to bits but Phil needs benching. Hardly ever looks up to go forward, always looking for that easy pass back….not sure why but seems to have lost a bit of that carefree confidence he had.

No idea why he wasn’t taken off tonight, Ineffective at best

Alvarez should have come in as a sub.
A Pep brain fart.
Fucking shit by Walker and Ederson.
Ederson had to save one fucking shot all game and he let it sail over his head.
I really am begining to think we need a sweeper keeper who can actually save shots.

Not Peps fault we missed clear cut chances. No blame on him today. Take the point and move on.
Of course it's never Peps fault, even when Foden spent the most of the game embarrassing himself against Ashly fucking young.
We had new and enthusiastic attacking talent on the bench and in Peps great wisdom that's where they stayed. Awful performance.

Someone said I must be blind because I said Kev’s radar was off. Didn’t say he played badly. He hit the bar, and had a chance to score after. Also played a slightly short pass to Ake with a Villa player close by and bad pass close to the end.

I’m always happy to converse on the performance of a player with people but now I remember why I hardly do it with people despite it being a forum.

With that said, that felt like a tough draw to swallow. Felt like the precedent of the match could be seen after Kyle failed to find Haaland within 5 minutes. A lot of sloppy passes as well. Rodri gave the ball away a number of times…not his best game but his shot wasn’t too far off from securing a win too.

Just glad Coutinho didn’t win it for them. Pep will make sure to remind them of focusing on one game at a time but I doubt the lads were thinking about the champions league while trying to win a game against Villa.

I’d like to say it’s one of those games but it feels slightly disappointing as Villa haven’t been great at all.
