Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post-Match Thread

Yes and we paid Sergio to score goals and he did by the bucket load, but pep had a problem with that, because Sergio wasn't his signing, I think pep has a.massive ego problem, his decisions for the champions league final against Chelsea convinced me of that

Pep didn’t have an issue with Serge per se, he had an issue with his closing down in the Pep system. When he got it, and carried on scoring, Pep and the rest of us loved him.

Erling is a phenomenon…Pep will accommodate this, Erling is bright, he will adjust.

That’s the frightening thing for the rest of them

I know we come out take our time to open a game up but Villa would of been so low in confidence so pep for once should told them to come out and at them 100mph but but when we didn’t push on from being 1 up there confidence grew because they weren’t getting a pasting and in the end we were lucky there goal was disallowed

Poor performance all over really.

Ederson OK - nothing he could have done for the goal, dealt with everything else well.

Stones, Dias, Ake when he came on - decent. Thought Stones was the stand-out performer in defence even with the error for the goal.

Walker still seems off it. Trying too many risky passes that only seem to come off about 1 time in 5.

Cancelo, hard to know where he was playing at times as usual. Didn't do enough going forward to justify not doing more of a defensive shift. Moved centrally to help Rodri when Ake came on but not much discernable improvement in the team performance.

Rodri - slow, and passing off. Looks tired. A terrible time for Phillips to be injured.

Kev - lovely ball for the assist, but passing not quite right for most of the match, and shooting not at its best either.

Gundo - poor game by his standards, didn't help enough with controlling the midfield and didn't contribute enough to the attacking play.

Bernardo - looked lively and industrious but not much came out of it.

Foden - is going through a dip in form lately. Needs managing carefully though it, we don't want to destroy his confidence but he needs to be better or be benched. Didn't cause anywhere near enough problems for Cash and Young.

Haaland - did what he needed to do for the goal and showed some promise in his tracking back and link-up play especially in the first part of the second half. Let down by the team - no-one close enough to him, and passes to him not good enough.

Mahrez when he came on - should have done better with that shot across goal, and seemed to be drifting centrally too much, leaving a big gap on the right.

Villa played okay, scored a good goal and I thought their disallowed one probably should have counted too.

I think we needed to make more and earlier substitutions. Baffling that we didn't throw Alvarez on when we needed a goal.

Even with this info, I think the choice to bring Ake on, rather than Sergio Gomez (and move Cancelo to the right side) is strange to me.

Changing the formation with 10 minutes to go is not usually a successful tactic, especially when you are sending a player that has been off with his passing for most of the match up the pitch to be the deeplying playmaker.

I couldn't agree more. Stones looks uncomfortable at right back.

Probably get slaughtered for this, but when pep arrived he said Sergio needed to adapt and work harder, best goal scorer in the clubs history, yet haaland comes in and is there just to score, haalands work rate is piss poor, yes get a ball to him he will score, but in the meantime we are playing with a.man light, haalands work rate is appalling
Hahaha, you fucking moron.

I would say Eddy was at fault for Palace's first goal last week. Poor handling lead to the free kick we conceded.
That’s cool. He wasn’t as they scored from a different phase of play.

Its a bit like saying Stones was at fault for the goal. Sure he could have cleared it earlier, but he wasn’t directly at fault for the goal.

I have never been so sure that we’ll win the league. We are miles better than anyone in this league this season. Erling stays fit for 80% off the season and we win by 15 points

I answered the question. Not scapegoating at all. His error was the initial one that lead to the goal.

In fact I don't think I've ever posted any negative about Eddy before.
I am not saying you are a person that is generally unreasonable — I know you aren’t.

But I do think you are being so with that take.

Literally all of the players stopped and went casual right before Coutinho struck the ball because the whistle was blown. It was a bad call by the linesmen, but saying Eddie couldn’t have saved a shot that didn’t actually go in to the top corner after he only casually jumped from a upright standing start is OTT.

(And it’s easy to put a shot on target when everyone has stopped trying to close you down.)
I understand and respect your point of view, but, I have reached to this conclusion from my experience watching Ederson in all previous games. He is not that goalkeeper who would stop that shot.

Reckon we could see more of Alvarez playing with Haaland more after this result. Alvarez having more of a free role like he had on Wednesday night.

If you look at my reply I say it's a run of form from last season. It seems to me and a lot of blues that every time the opposition shoot it seems to end up in the net. To me he seems to get bored. You don't have to agree with me. I have defended him in the past, that he is perfect keeper for our system, he is the best I've seen with his feet, but for me he just isn't saving enough shots.
So he’s not at fault for any of the goals, but he’s out of form?

Why are you bringing Gundo into it? Gundo has been excellent all season but was woeful today. Therefore many people (not just me) are saying he was poor and should have been brought off. Most (you will never get 100% agreement on here) will accept that to be the case. However, you will not have a bad word said against Mahrez and it has absolutely nothing to do with his performance in any given week. You blindly back him because of nationality and that means your opinion means Jack-all.
For many years now, you have NEVER said a single positive thing about Mahrez. You even said: YOU DESPISE HIM (remember last year's West Ham game ?). That's chronic hatred. That's sickness.

Edit: FYI and FWIW, I have been following City since the Franny Lee era in the 70s. Maybe, I have been a City fan for much longer than you.

Strange tactics, in my eyes.

We could see the team wasn't flowing as Villa didn't want it to. We needed our own disruptor in Álvarez who worked to great effect in the last game. Unless he's carrying an injury, it was bizarre to leave him out.

Hopefully, it's a lesson learned that silk and steel can work together at dog fighters like Villa.

I think Grealish is going to replace Foden for a little while.
We had our luck against these mfs when it mattered the most, we should let this one go.
Keep going, easy 10pts gap by January against dippers.
