Grealish hasn't flourished there either because neither Jack nor Phil are natural wide wingers and making that use of them doesn't enable either of them to shine. They're both more effective playing more centrally and with more freedom, but clearly Pep wants that wide LW job done by someone in many matches and one or the other of them gets lumbered with it. That Phil is now getting criticised for exactly the same things Jack was criticised for last season (playing too safe, passing back) surely implies when they're playing like this it's as instructed. Stick either of them more centrally and you see a different player. If people don't like how they're used when Pep sticks them on the touchline, maybe criticise Pep, not the players following their coach's orders.
He has been injured and was on the bench yesterdayI don't think Grealish has played much in the last few matches or been on the bench. Does anyone know what's up and when he is expected back? - his stats weren't great last year and they are not going to improve whilst he doesn't play (plus I'm thinking about transferring him out of my fantasy football team.)
One man's fragility is another's inability to defend without the ball I suppose. We haven't got a fragility, the problem we have is we can't defend without the ball. The only fact on the table is Villa literally had one shot on target and they scored it. It was the same against Newcastle although they took the game to us at times and created far more chances so we conceded even more.
We seem to have this every year but it's a product of how we play and it can't be fixed. We aren't going to harden up at the back and change how we play with the risk of conceding 1 shot on target.
On another day we'd take our chances and batter Villa 3-1. 4-1 or 5-1. It's just the way it is and last year we finished top playing that way. This year if we draw a few of these type of games but win the rest then we'll win the league. I'd be more concerned if we were losing and playing badly but that isn't happening.
Yes, but against Palace we were losing amd had to take chances to get back into the game. Peps game is pocession based until we find the killer pass.I am not a football expert just a match going fan.
I think City are a better team when we have overlapping full backs.
I would have thought with the worlds best centre forward City would play this way and be whipping in crosses for Haaland.
But no full backs go into midfield and the wingers Foden and Bernie and Marhez must be under instructions to come inside as well !
We look so much better with attacking wingers.
Once Pep changed the formation against palace we ripped them apart. But yesterday he kept it the same :/
I agree .The wide roles are like a punishment in Peps formation -Torres, Jesus ,Sterling ,Mahrez now Foden and Bernie are suffering in those static roles. I get it creates space but with the wrong selection that space is used to break through our slow midfield screen and get at our back 4.For Pep it is about control.
When in possession the wide players have to make a decision, if they can progress they will , if not they have to recycle the ball. Progression relies on them receiving in space and then movement beyond tbem( as for the goal.)
In the first half Cancelo didn't tiime his runs well and Foden got little support from midfield runs, in the second half he got no support and balls into him were long and poor, and therefore fans will say he had a poor game.
As you say difficult to blame him for doing as instructed. We all would like to see him playing narrow and receiving the ball more.
As I said in another post, teams are stronger this Season, are well organised double press in wide positions and it will not be as easy as some fans believe it should be.
Was your dad Confucius? All true I don't disagree.. But as my dad used to say..."if the dog hadn't stop to shit it should have won the race". Hindsight is a great thing....and I wish I'd had it with the Euromillions numbers on Friday night! ☺
Well said ,Some right mard arses on here! We drew and easily could have lost. 6 games in. Best start under pep. 5 points off the scousers. Top scorer and top assister. Still have players out injured! Chill the fuck out and try and enjoy the ride!!!

Oh thank you, I hadn't spotted that he was on the bench yesterday. I shall keep him in my ff team, I have high hopes of many assists from him this season. He has been injured and was on the bench yesterday
Some of us just have a sunnier disposition on life than others, mate. We can also look at the bigger picture when it comes to City and accept that sometimes we will be poor and drop points.More eggshell.
Happy clapping cheerleaders v the Boo Boys . It's like West Side Story.Well said ,
I’d call them ‘Boo Boys’
Yep not the result we were hoping for ,
But …..
That’s not possible as we lost the first game against Spuds last season.
Even if we won the next 5, and I can’t remember, we’re only 1 point down.
It wouldn’t be a different story though because if you took Haaland away we would adapt like we’ve always done and still find ways to score like we’ve always done.
The overreaction to this game is odd.
Bear in mind this is Peps best start to a season with us so far.
But lost at home to PalaceWe beat Newcastle and Villa away
We are useless at stopping crosses coming in. Half hearted attempts regularly by Cancelo and then yesterday Rodri for the goal. Crossing is easy against us, we need to tighten up that part of our game because when we don’t click up front like yesterday, a 1-0 win will do fine! They both have a tendency to dawdle on the ball. We aren't very good at stopping crosses either, particularly on Cancelo's side.
Sometimes it looks like they want to show they can hang onto the ball, no matter who is trying to take it off them. Like, their ego kicks in. When an easy pass is on. It's frustrating.
