A lot of it will be down to policing but come on , losing the head of state, head of the church and commander in chief is huge event and is history being made, football. doesnt matter
Sorry, but she was a 96 year old woman in serious ill-health who was declining rapidly. Shock horror, she died... \0/

Allow life to continue as normal & declare her funeral a public holiday so those who wish to mourn can do so. Why should everyone else be affected.

We bought food in especially to feed my two Spurs cousins who were supposed to stay at our, where we were all going to the match. Who's gonna reimburse me for all the bleedin extra scran we bought which'll now spoil & go to waste? :-/

The Windsors are descendants from Alfred the Great.

It wasn’t “just because they won a battle”.
No, they are German. Their real name is Battenbenberg. Queen Victoria's grandfather came from Hanover. Prince Albert was also German. They changed their name in 1917 because we were fighting Germany and there was anti-german sentiment.
The idea that they go back 1200 years as Kings/Queens of England is nonsense

No doubt were going to be asked to play 3 games in 7 days at some point, maybe even twice. The bigger teams with deeper squads will benefit - lets hope were one of those.

It's also the opening weekend of the Women's Super League and we had a Sold Out Minicomms that would have been buzzing against Arsenal. They'll now no doubt shoehorn this into a shit midweek spot where 25% of the fans won't be able to make it, the atmosphere will be ruined due to the lack of expectation etc. At a time when the spectacle of the Women's game is so much in the spotlight it's a shit start.

Of course everyone should and would pay their respects appropriately and mourn the Queens passing in their own way. I'm not sure the cancellation of public events somehow shows the event holders are "paying their respects". Surely a demonstrative show of their "respects" pre-match would be a much more visible confirmation of such. Are we to all wear black for a year like some tribute to Victorian mourning values.

The heads of the Premier League will be hoping this gesture leads to an invite to the funeral or some other future Royal invite. They're also thinking most people are ardent royalists who will be offended if the games go ahead, suppose they may be weary of a backlash?

They certainly haven't thought of the fans who've bought tickets, transport and hotels, the businesses relying on football or the schedule.

There’s an ever expanding group of people in this country who not only want to be told what to do, when to do it and how to do it, but expect everyone else to be told similarly and it really grinds my gears..

Hmmm...now that I think about it, you are right. There was absolutely no external influence behind this decision.

The government literally put out a statement saying there is no mandatory closing of events and it’s down to organisations.

Charles is flying to London to take up the Crown, I doubt he’s sat there fucking thinking “you know what I’ll get City Spurs off now”.

Some fucking right tits on this thread.

Maybe because she wasn't just any 96 year old lady? Just a thought, like.

More seriously, I don't think they should have cancelled the games, and I feel bad for people inconvenienced. But it is what it is. As someone else said, this is a pretty seismic event in UK history and you cannot reasonably expect everything to just carry on as if nothing has happened.
but isnt that exactly what will happen? life will continue all weekend, many millions will go to work, the pubs will be busy the countryside will be busy, gigs, sailing races, family get togethers and meals out. All of this will continue, ostensibly as if nothing had happened (but i am sure many will discuss it and have their opinion - it's a big talking point as you say), but why cancel organised events 'out of respect' ?

So does Boris I guess

Stupid is as stupid does
Attacking the working class on a Manchester football forum.

Nice.

But no, Boris’s approval rating isn’t high with anyone.

The premier league’s contempt for supporters and players beggers belief. Supporters everywhere made plans and incurred costs for this weekends fixtures. Cancelling the entire programme with 24 hours notice will leave a lot of people out of pocket through no fault of their own. At least for next weekend there is some notice but this weekend trains, hotels, buses and flights will have been booked well in advance. Good luck to any supporter trying to get refunds.

Yes this an extraordinary event, however on top of another extraordinary event, the winter World Cup, leading to a disjointed season, means players will play an incredible number of matches in a relatively short period of time. No consideration for player welfare at all.

I have no doubt that the Queen meant a lot to a huge proportion of population of the UK and it is understandable that such a significant event is properly honoured. However FIFA’s decision to utterly disrupt the footballing calendar should have seen the Premier League take a pragmatic decision based on the consequences of cancelling fixtures. Instead the awful decision to stage the World Cup in Qatar is compounded by the premier league’s incredibly short sighted decision and supporters and players treated with utter disregard.

A difficult situation has been made far worse than necessary and it’s left to supporters and of course players to deal with the consequences.

I genuinely hope you are taking the piss with the commander in chief comment.
