I also didn't even remotely begin to suggest Pep is daft, he's just not perfect, he makes mistakes like anybody else, I even included a very similar one to the mistake I believe he's making with Phil in Bernardo a few years back. With hindsight we can all see his form dipped when he was playing a different role every week and we all saw the huge improvement once he was getting games in the same role. I'm pretty sure Bernardo himself commented about a lack of rhythm at the time.

Bernardo isn’t as good as a winger as he is as a CM

But Foden can be lethal as a LW (Whole 20/21 season), super effective as a RW (Liverpool Away game 2021, and etc.), very creative as a LCM or RCM (Match-winner assist against Atletico), False9 (2021 / 2022 season)

Exactly.And the point is although predominantly left footed
Foden can use his right with devastating results,as his exquisite back heel against Wolves showed.

When you have a genuinely two footed multi skilled/ talented footballer roaming around the 18 and 6 yard boxes......That spells danger.i could see that in Phil from day one.

Very very difficult for oppents to read or defend against. The concentration levels of opposing defenders have got to be huge...and very draining....you do not know where or when the lad will strike.

I actually feel sorry for other teams defences this season.

He can’t have too many complaints if he isn’t a starter at the World Cup. Not entirely his fault, but it feels like his England career hasn’t really got going yet
 
For the first time, he looks short of confidence. It's been steady progress up to now and everything just came naturally, this is his first real dip - most young players have it around this age. Hopefully he has the character to come out of the other side a better player.
 
I remember when Phil was on the rise and Pep kept saying he would be a better player AFTER he has taken a dip and come through it. It’s not enjoyable to watch him like this when we know what he’s actually capable of, but we have to just keep backing him, stick with him, and know that Pep is highly likely to be spot on when he predicted how Foden’s career would go.
 
OK. I`ve thought this for long enough and it needs saying. Phil Foden needs to get stuck in to at least one tackle a game then build up from there. He adds nothing defensively to the team. Instead of a tackle he will jockey the opponent`s player`s rather than tackle. Please for your own sake get a fucking tackle in and show a bit of grit or you`ll never fill the potential we all want you to achieve.
 
I think there's a mix of personal issues and professional development (playing everywhere) that is seeing his progress reverse a bit.

He's at a pivotal couple of years here, I think he needs to either be molded into a 10 with freedom to score, drift wide and dribble and drop to playmake, or let him learn LW or RW and not both, because it is very different to play on opposite wings when your not ambidextrous.

Personally, I prefer to see him closer centrally with freedom to move where he needs to be, something feels off about him when he is in more rigid positions. He should be KdB's successor.
 
Foden won't get any chances on LW in the national team because SG system uses LWB or LB to put in crosses thus the LW must be a right footer to cut inside. That means Sterling Grealish or Mount. IF SG goes, who knows. But I highly doubt that the next manger will build a team with Foden on LW because he is the only left footed English left winger. England manager has to build a system that can make sure 2 or more players can slot in.

The only chance is either #10 or RW. He rarely plays in #10 role and currently Mount Bellingham Grealish all start in front of him in #10 role because they have club experiences in similar positions.

Things are not ideal for him and when Walker and Tripper gradually phase out from national team it will be even more difficult. Less pro-man city voice from dressing room. It is difficult for Phil. But I am happy as long as he can play well for City. You don't need to be a big success in every game.
 
I have not watched the match. I read an article by Alex Keble (Optus Sport) and it said the following two things about Foden:

"There was a lot to be said for the way Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden interacted, both in transitional moments...and in applying the first wave of the counter press"

"Still it was Foden's movement and the intelligence of Bellingham, Saka and Mount that brought the best moments of this match".

Was he maybe playing a running/pressing role but because he didn't score or get an assists he was seen to have a poor match?

Southgate will only be there for another few months though.

Southgate came out last night and said with a straight face Phil is not strong enough to play in the MF, or something like that as a reason why he was banished to this nether-position on the right. Yes Einstein, stick a left foot non-winger to that position and then bury him after the game with some stupid comment. To say that about a player who's been playing for Pep's team and who clocked 20+ appearances just in PL for the past three seasons is a proof of his ineptitude. English (and the bunch of 'back-three' managers) just don't know what to do with the players like Foden, he was going through the same shit in U21 team. He'll be like Scholes, totally irrelevant for England.

I love Pep and it's hard to question him 99% of the time but I couldn't agree more with you here. The fact he did so well out on the wing at the highest level of professional football despite having no experience out there coming through the academy speaks volumes but I always thought that was going to be temporary. It seems not as Pep clearly doesn't trust him in the middle still after all this time.
 
I thought he was involved in some of England’s best build-up play in the first half, but with Kane playing even further or deeper on occasions, little wonder Foden didn’t create any clear cut chances. Admittedly he crossed too deep when Kane was in the right place on one occasion, but he also found ways through the German defence which others didn’t have the vision to pick up on. Yes after he was subbed England looked more balanced, but only because Southgate brought players on in their natural positions.
