The Conservative Party

Interesting analysis of post 2019 political movement and why the tories are losing so many voters.

We are genuinely in the midst of enormous social, political and economic change, which is why there is such division.

Within my own family, things have been very difficult: on the one hand there is my dad, a Conservative voter and Brexiteer, who believes that most of the issues we have are because of the influx of immigrants, who are why he cannot get hospital appointments, GP appointments or from A to B because of the excess traffic on the road. He believes that civil servants are lefties and wokes, and should be made to return to the office. He finds it difficult to listen to other perspectives and will not countenance the fact that an expanding population is, generally, beneficial to the economy but, naturally, requires investment in services.

My daughter has just got a job that she applied for. She left the last because the owner bought office space and asked my daughter to commit to working there part of the week. This went against the previous agreement they had. She also declined to give her a pay rise because of her reluctance to work in the office. Her new job is entirely remote, working from home, £10k more per year, gym membership and so on. She wishes to be able to travel, work abroad, and to be able to buy things from Europe.

The bridge between these two schools of thought strikes hard at political and social thinking. For myself, I admire my daughter's stance: she is skilled in what she does and understands that has a value, one that means that she doesn't need to simply accept what she is told. My dad, born at the end of WWII, is from a different era, worked seven days a week, and struggles to understand the changing world - he won't even have a bank card, refuses to buy online, and walks to the bank to get cash. He also forgets that we are an immigrant family who fled Ireland during the famine. Needless to say, he has always been a Conservative voter while, generally, the world is changing to a more liberal, left-leaning stance. Looking at the age profile of Conservative voters, unless things change for the Conservative party, their time is finite.

I desperately want to agree with you, but have lived through so much electoral disappointment that it wouldn't surprise me if they somehow claw it back.

As a side note, whilst that map would be fantastic, I'd actually love to see the Lib Dems do really well to force Labour's hand on electoral reform. Without it, I can imagine 5 years of Labour and then back to another stint of being fucked over by the Tories.

Just a few short years ago the Germans were smugly laughing at the previous US President as he warned of the dangers of energy dependence on Russia, now they are advising their citizens to wash their balls and armpits and prepare for a long hard Winter. A week is a long time in politics, two years is an eternity, so I wouldn't be counting your chickens just yet....

Isn‘t it hilarious when people make strident predictions that turn out to be completely misconceived?

Not seen you post about Russian military hegemony on the Ukraine thread for a while btw…

The plan is fucked. It was economically and politically illiterate and the markets fucked it, and us as collateral. What moron on top of the many challenges most countries face, decides to hack away at the foundations of our financial system thereby making the real challenges a lot fucking worse?

As for a business friendly low tax environment- don’t give me that fucking bollocks. What business wants is financial and regulatory stability more than low taxes and that is something we do not provide. No business wants an environment where you have an absolute tosser like Rees-Mogg cheerfully binning rules and regs with zero scrutiny or a PM threatening a trade war with Europe every 5 fucking minutes.

How about you get a clue about business and what businesses want before showing your arse?
These leeches currently in power are just thieves.
Robbing the poor to maintain their lives of opulence.
1 example the energy price cap of £2,500. Such an amount from someone on a modest wage is going to make a large hole in their finances. Whereas someone who has just received a £55,000 tax cut is still £52,500 up on the deal!

a 50% improvement sees them "only" lose to a 160 seat majority

350 seat majority - that conference will be a bloodbath - can you imagine the glum faces on the delegates

IIRC the last time the working classes were in unison and turned against the tories was just after the care homes fiasco and the handling of the first lockdown.

The media was suddenly outraged about BLM and statues being graffitied. Then everyone starting arguing amongst themselves as to the rights and wrongs of such actions and low and behold, the tories had deflected the spotlight from their shortcomings and they faded from public scrutiny.

Wonder what ‘lefty woke’ agenda will be raised this time to get us all arguing amongst ourselves, in order to take the heat off them for this latest debacle?

The very publication of the impact of that level of polling will cause a number of people to take fright and think about giving them another chance with a new leader. Whilst these numbers would mean we would even get rid of the bewigged twat who has been stinking out my own constituency for years, I would give that up if we could instead have electoral reform that stopped unrepresentative shitshows damaging the country in the future.
