My headmaster in the early 60s was a Labour Councillor, he introduced workplace visits which included Mather and Platt, Platt Brother's and Hawker Siddeley.
Whilst doing aircraft tech at college part of the syllabus was dedicated to politics. Thankfully most tutors had bolshevik tendencies.

Well, that's another Tory reform. You can't be an employee of the council and be elected as a councillor for that council. And in those days the council would generally give teachers who were councillors time off to attend council meetings (Manchester City Council met on a Wednesday afternoon).
