Liz Truss

The explanation was....... she had to have a meeting with the chair of the 1922 back bench committee. If ever there was a meeting that could be moved, this my friends was it...... feeble at the very best. It ranks alongside "the dog ate my homework sir".
The Chair of the 1922 committee was sitting in the chamber when Penny Maudaunt was standing at the despatch box!

Does that mean we get the five week beauty pageant we had in the summer? What a waste of time if the main protagonists couldn’t achieve more votes than what we have now. We need a vote of no confidence in the government.
What's more likely is that the 1922 committee will change the rules so that 100 MP votes will be needed for a nomination which should whittle it down to either one or two straight away leading to an immediate change or a single one off member vote if one of the two doesn't stand down.

Where is that reported? Not that I don’t doubt it
I heard it through work. Dan Hodges has said the same on twitter which might be the original source.

Seems to be some confusion on what rules they are playing by. My reading of that is that the rules are in flux as they try to control events. So might not be a vote until they decide how to proceed. They will want a quick resolution from vote to new PM. As suggested a threshold of 100 MP nominations would do it, but they need to nail the detail and come up with candidate.

It’s a zombie Parliament whoever they put in charge, the electorate is now awake to what a cluster fuck brexit is and was. We can’t keep stumbling along for another two years until we can have a general election.

I think currently the rules give her a year without challenge (so I saw it reported anyway).

What it does mean is that Brady needs to consider changing those rules.

The real trouble is that it will do more damage and there isn't a clear 'best' option to promote unless Mordaunt is the focus. For the MPs to have Truss second last time, and the party members have her a clear winner is a problem that won't be resolved if there's a contest. In addition, what other cobbled together economic strategy will be allowed - how wide is Tufton St influence, is there anyone left to do the big 3 cabinet jobs after PM.

Any realist tory MP knows that they are basically planning a damage limitation exercise ahead of an imminent election. They know the membership can't be trusted to pick a viable leader so it has to be stitch up. But that runs real risk of the party splitting up as the root and branch didn't want to ditch BJ and then wanted LT . Are they going to get behind a 'unity candidate', possibly not. So it's all debatable that this exercise gets them into a better position.

Dominic Cummings was banging on about forming a new party last week. Thankfully he is widely ignored now but I think he might be on to something. The loonies have too much hold on the grass roots. It could be terminal.

A new party without Labour splitting at the same time would be chaotic to say the least. They'd presumably end up having to agree not to oppose each other, but each is unlikely to be the largest party and have first shot at forming a govt.

They'd also have problems getting the whole raft of new candidates they'd need, and I expect that the moderates would be wary of the loonies infiltrating and subverting.

Fully agree that anyone hoping to be an MP in the next few years would be looking at it as 'best option'. I suspect that might be Mordaunt, with Sunak as Chancellor.

How this plays out would 100% be down to what side gets to keep the family estate. There is already a UKIP and Reform offering. They are no different to the loony agenda. If loonies take control of the full party (only possible with a majority of MPs) then we are on for dangerous times.
