The bottom line is what top club in England would employ Southgate as their manager? Not one is the answer. Yet here he is in the top job in the country managing the England side. He got the job by default due to Allardyce being his usual shady greedy self. He has some of the best talent at his disposal and I'll say it again, any success if we get any will be in spite of him and not because of him. We're in yet another easy group, Wales, USA and Iran and are stuttering through it. Our football is turgid, negative and fearful. He has no plan B and if we go behind his whole gameplan is fucked because we're relying on defending, set pieces and hope. He's a typical safe FA appointment. Politically correct, bland, boring, never going to rock the boat. I hope he takes his waistcoat and fucks off back to Middlesbrough where he belongs.

Great post. Southgate has failed to tackle the problem of not linking defence to attack for years. He is fixated on playing two defensive midfield players in most matches and none of his teams have any creativity. As you say he will not get a major club job when he quits. His style is 25 years out of date. Perhaps the reason so many players make poor managers is they can only replicate the tactics they played under themselves so they will always be behind the times.
the biggest problem though is that Southgate and his staff really don't see that they played poorly last night he thinks they played ok.
He just hasn't the mindset that these group of players can be better he sees it completely different to most people hence he will not change anything, only thing he will do is go 5 in defense against anyone desent trying to hold on until pens.

Doubt he would be welcome back at Middlesbrough, considering he got them relegated after being UEFA cup finalists and an established premier league side. And that there speaks volumes.

Southgate gets a lot of praise because he’s been good with the media and the players and whatnot. If that’s the case, then why not just put him in some sort of PR position for the England team or a “director of football” or something and leave the actual coaching and tactics down to somebody much more qualified.

Not enough white plastic chairs for my liking..get some great distance with them

Apparently thousands of Welsh fans decided to go to Tenerife for the world cup as it was cheaper than Qatar. That area is Veronica's strip, any regular visitor to Tenerife, as I am, avoids it like the plague. Rife with pickpockets, muggers, drink spiking and mobs of same sex pissed up idiots on stag/hen/ party do's.

Pearce confirms what all City fans already know...when it comes to tactics he is a complete moron. His comments about Foden are beyond parody. He was the second worse manager I have seen at our club (behind Alan Ball). The fact he spent so long in the England set-up speaks volumes about the judgement of the fools at the FA.
Yes I too have memories, nightmares really of the Ball and Pearce eras.
The prospect of watching and indeed sitting through England games conjures up feelings akin to those of a Sunday afternoon growing up in the seventies during the depths of winter. It was all so dull and grey, nowhere was open and the only thing to look forward to was the dubious delights of a tea comprising of meat and two veg, songs of praise, bath and bed followed by school the next day.
The country has changed immeasurably since then. We are a much more multi cultural society. Most people have taken a holiday overseas rather than spent two weeks in a caravan in North Wales or, if they were really lucky, a bed and breakfast in Cornwall. There are a variety of foods to eat in the shops or restaurants and I am sure we all have friends from different ethnic backgrounds.
I feel the FA, with the likes of Pearce and Southgate, still seem stuck in that 70's mindset. Despite all the work put in to develop the youth set up it hasn't seeped into the performances on the pitch of the senior team even though the individual skill levels of players have improved.
I don't doubt Southgate's commitment to the cause. You can see how much the national team means to him the way he belts the anthem out, something in itself stuck in that era- 'long to reign over us' and all that.
Anyway, to me, it still feels like we are being served up meat and two veg where as the rest of the world has moved on.

Not sure where the " good with the media " comes from, because he's bloody wooden and says what he thinks they want to hear, and seldom gets really quizzed or challenged.

He's in a position for which he is totally unequipped or qualified having been a bloody failure at club level.

Doesn't deserve to be anywhere near an international set up.

The safe option for the FA .

Ha ha great piece! Sunday afternoons were dreadful. Only the big match highlights to look forward to with Gerald Sinstadt and the looming prospect of school the next day. I remember as a small child living in Hulme we used to visit my grandad in Wythenshawe on a Sunday. As we were leaving to get the bus home that mournful sing something simple programme was starting on the radio. It's depressing sound summed up my mood. Years later I lived in Hollyhead for a while and all the pubs used to close on a Sunday in Wales, the only place open was the railway club so we joined.

I still get chills thinking back to those days growing up in England in the late 60's and 70's

Didn’t live there long enough to know how to spell it though:-)
