Has anyone put their central heating on yet?

Years ago when my mum was alive I had to force her to use her central heating. She turned it off and put her Canon Gasmiser onto no 1 and sat with her blankets around her in front of the fire.
Even though I paid her gas bill for her she kept refusing to use it.

That generation, many would literally die before the perceived "Shame" of getting into debt. They wouldn't want to be a burden or dependent on others either so wouldn't use the heating for that reason. While admiring that fortitude, my parents are the same, it's decades of making do often on low incomes that leads to that mindset which is quite sad.

they knew what real cold and poverty was.

my Uncle spent over 30 years in and out of prison but it started when he was 10 stealing food for his Mum. Dad had fucked off. This was the 30's.

They sure did. It's criminal and sad to think that in 2022 people are still experiencing it and dying as a result. I remember being a kid in the old pre war terraced houses in Hulme. No bathroom, just a coal fire and backyard/outside toilet. Always cold and damp and one night during heavy rain the ceiling collapsed onto my bed.

That's criminal too. Stealing food because you're hungry and starving should never be a crime.

yeah...they sent him to a Borstal and then the vicious circle began. No fucker would employ him ....ever.

He died aged 64 and my Auntie said prison food killed him (Cancer of the esophagus) Looking at him you'd never believe he was a thief.
 
Went for another hour this morning , not having it on in the kitchen sent freezing air through to the hall and bedroom as that door is open for merlin but it warmed my bones

He goes out , he would be a right mardy bugger if i kept him in lol, the kitchen is huge and no point having the heating on as the cat flaps and cold porch makes it freezing and i only pass through to get things then back to the bedroom

Another memory was my dad relating that the church charity he belonged to were discussing candidates and one was an old lady who spent a lot of her solitary night time in her local pub. Most saw that as a reason to not include her but my dad said the real reason was she made a half of mild last her til closing time and she was warm so saved on her coal.
He said this reasoning got her back as a receiver of charity.

Not to mention she got some company as well. No TV and internet back then. Well done to your dad. A small thing can make a huge difference to people.
 
I have finally sucomed and put mine on over the last few days. Prior to that it was a case of wearing a couple of fleeces. It's when I am sat watching the football that I feel cold. Luckily as the user name suggests I have two whippets. When they sit next to you, which they just have to do, and I put a blanket over all of us they are like furnaces, it gets very warm. They aren't known as poor man's hot water bottles for nothing.
