2022 World Cup Discussion

just seen this

That was a top moment, in fairness to wio he actually had sufficient grace to do the 3 second explainer for anyone watching (presumably Mars based) who might not have immediately understood the context of Zabba's excellent trolling, which was actually quite professional on his part.

Urrgggh can't believe i've said something even faintly positive about him, I'm off for a shower now and to save anyone the effort I'll do it to myself.....

RAG!!

It's safe to say this world cup is wide open. A team that is comfortable in its system has every chance to do well. The odd talented player can carry a team - as Mbappe and Griezmann have shown, but Morocco and Japan winning their groups has shown that there's also something in just working hard in a certain system. England have the tournament experience and comfort in a system to go far in this tournament. It's whether we're able to play with the confidence we need to go and win the tricky games. Our win over Germany in the Euro's showed that we can do it despite the weight of expectation and history against us. If we play France that will be a real test. Do we worry about their players or do we play to our own strengths? For me, without so many key players they're a good side rather than a great one. Walker can deal with Mbappe. You'd want Rice to just follow Griezmann around and then we have plenty of talent to hurt them defensively.

The world rankings are slightly skewed but plenty of the big boys are out or got through by the seat of their pants. We're doing alright so far!

You'll probably win because my luck at betting is abysmal, you have got a shout with the Croats and the Argies, you must have got fair odds on Croatia early doors.
Just looked. They were 51:1 it's come in to 29:1.

I only put a £1 on on the basis they were priced high and in a weakish group. They won't win so I'll cash out before they face anyone good. I'm guessing 50:50 they beat Japan. Then they face Brazil.

Yanks 100-1
Australia 300-1

England 19-2
France 11-2

Fiver on each and hoping to at least get my money back, Japan will win it and bamboozle us all ;)

Whether that cross got a slight deflection of not, two direct assists for goals in three games is hardly being ‘anonymous’ as was the claim.

But if a 29 year old, with the second most England goals in history has had a couple of quiet games and is now a ‘busted flush’ Then let’s fuck him off and bring in a 30 year replacement with one England goal in his life to get the job done.
I wouldn’t bring Wilson in either I don’t think, I’d start Rashford central as most defences would drop deeper allowing Foden, who I’d play instead of Henderson, and Bellingham more space. I’d go with Grealish out wide on one side with Saka on the other.

I think there is definitely a drop in quality in this world cup from the traditional top nations which has allowed for more of a level playing field.

The tournament has some great individuals but lacks great teams.

I can only remember as far back as the 02 world cup and I think the winners of the last 5 world cups would walk this tournament.

France and Brazil look the standouts but in no way are they vintage teams, and to add to the discussion of those 2 teams I think half of the England team gets in each of their XI.

France have by far the best player in the tournament and that's why they will win it in my opinion.
I agree with this. I don't know if it's a complete drop-off in quality vs the global standard improving though. Japan, USA, and Morocco all look quite decent.

This will be the best chance for England to win another world cup. We just need someone like Bellingham/Foden/Grealish to break into that superstar bracket and drag us to the final. Could happen, but probably won't lol.

Rashford is English mate.

There's not been a drop in quality at all. World Cups always have shocks and in fact 2002 was Germany v South Korea and Brazil v Turkey in the semi finals. The USA and Senegal made the quarters. The Spanish team in 2010 was incredible. The German side in 2014 was okay, but I would say that was when there was a real lull in the form of most top nations. France were very good in 2018 again but are missing key players.

We will only find out if there has been a drop in quality if England wins it ;)

The best way to win a competition is to enter when there are no outstanding opponents.

I won a famous TV quiz (can't say which cos it might reveal my identity) because that year there were no quiz monsters like Kevin or Pat off Eggheads on the show.

By the same token, England have a good chance this year,

I wonder if the climate has anything to do with it ?

Who is not welcome?

It makes me laugh when the nation of "it's coming home" , the same Nation that hosted the Euros and witnessed it's own fans smashing there way into the stadium causing havoc having the audacity to humiliate Qatar.

I wonder how many crimes have been committed in Qatar during this tournament, I would imagine they could be counted on one hand, if not one finger.
Whoooooooooooooooooooooooosh
