FA confirm Southgate will stay on until after Euro 2024 (p 101)

I think Henderson was a bit of a mistake last night, he was providing running and overlaps like he usually does but more quality is needed and that's Southgates issue. He wanted someone who is half 6 and half 8 but Henderson isn't great at either roles. England were able to overload on saka and Henderson's side because France overcompensated on fodens side, it needed more quality in the middle and on the other side. The right play would have been to move Bellingham back and bring foden inside to cause panic, I'd have got grealish in on the left because he attracts players even more. Southgate has done well but his main issue has and always will be tactical naivety. Imho that is a crime given that at one point we had every one of the best managers in the world in the PL and still at least have the top two best.

He chose Henderson for running and pressing, and tbf to the guy he was doing it just like he does at Liverpool, but he was doing it alone. You have to commit to something, if you're going to press then Southgate needs to instruct everyone to. It's those small details that take you over the line in these types of games, but it's something that Southgate has always lacked. Just like the Italy final, we came up short.
Easy to have a go at henderson but Rice was the worst midfileder yesterday and offered fuck all.

I would have prefered if he had given henderson, who is a better holding midfielder and has been for years that role and dropped Rice who has been average all tournament as he has been at west ham, or even played phillips moved foden inside and played grealish or rashford

The only reason he got the job was because of the Fat Sam debacle. His CV is empty, nothing of any note as a player or manager. In the years he's been there he's beaten low ranked teams and no one else.
Even when he ditches that wingback,5 at the back nonsense he's got 2 defensive midfielders in his 433.
How can Slabhead play every game for England yet can't get a game in a shite rag side, the ability of a park footballer.
Impossible for him to react tactically to the opponents whether we're winning or losing, also substitutions are usually like for like and too late.
I want a manager that will at least have a go, I despair if he's still in the job at the Euro's.

From the reports you hear, Southgate has done wonders off the pitch for England but he's not the one to take us the final step.

I'd like to see someone like Ancelotti approached.

As I said last nigh though Southgate won't be going anywhere IMO. He's the perfect man for the FA. Steady Eddie, won't bring any trouble, sensible enough to deal with any shit thrown his way and just about 'good enough' to get us far enough to keep the press off the FA's back.

If it became a chpice of Southgate, gerrard, lampard then stay as is.

Howe and Potter are going nowhere

Four players rated as 8's this morning in the DT, and Rice is one of 'em. I wouldn't give him a standing eight before any game. But when I looked at the team before ko I wondered who would provide the midfield creativity. Didn't think Rice would, but he's 'safe' and that's what Southgate prefers.

We probably had as good a squad as anyone and better than most, but where was the panache. Southgate has safety first tattooed on both buttocks, and a world cup has never been won by a team playing safe.

Can someone tell me if it was a tactical decision to only try and supply Foden with long balls or did the players take that on themselves? It was an awful joke to have a player that talented with the ball at his feet receive such poor service. Pretty sure Saka was only getting a better go of it because his opposing French number was absolute shit.

Why take of the two players causing the French problems ?

Southgate is clueless
The moment he brought Sterling on it was gone. The substitution of Saka was bizarre to say the least as he was probably England's most effective player on the night. He had caused their left back and the left sided centre half loads of problems and the French resorted to just kicking him, although the referee, who was truly shocking, gave him nothing.

I’m not asking you to agree but I don’t see it as an outrageous suggestion to insist on an English manager for the English team.

Why not go the next step and let the players pick whichever country they like? We’re half way there with the grandparents nonsense anyway.

Not sure its legal to advertise a job and state only English people can apply ;)

England looked better when Foden came inside more and got on the ball. He needs to play more of a number ten as at times for the national team he seems starved of the ball on the left hand side.

No decent manager on the way up is going to take the job. And the FA are only ever going to give it to someone with a big name.

I'd keep Southgate.
I imagine every other nationality would rather England keep him as well.
Genuinely baffled how anybody can say keep him, even more baffled that people are saying who can replace him as a reason to keep him.
Laughable.

Funny thing - I looked up this guy as I had never heard of him, and one article suggested he was one of South American's best. My ERO texted me part way through and said that he would sooner have had Lahoz! Absolutely dreadful!

Southgate wants defensive qualities from his midfield and Phil should be an out and out attacking midfielder. He has the skills, talent and quality to cause enormous problems but Southgate sees problems where others see opportunities. That's the way he's always been.

... never won owt, never will - even with the most talented squad in a generation. Style is both dull and unsuccessful. Marching orders now - give the new man eight years to reformat. Southgate's 'flattering' stats mean fuck all
