FA confirm Southgate will stay on until after Euro 2024 (p 101)

Obviously it doesn’t have to be. As has been proved twice in the past. But I personally, and I know I’m not alone, feel it’s an admission of failure before you start if you can’t find a single suitable candidate from your home country and are forced to look abroad.
Bizarre.

Which is why, even though I’m no huge fan, I’d probably stick with Southgate for now. Howe almost certainly wouldn’t be interested. And he’s the only one I’d even consider might be an upgrade.

Even all the African countries have realised that a home manager, even a limited one, is a better bet than a foreigner with no connection to the country, just there for a nice payday.
If Pochettino was interested he'd be a significant upgrade on Southgate.

Managed the n England for 8 years, knows the English game and players and would certainly play better football than what they are playing now

france were no better than us tbf.

only issue with Southgate is he needs to throw caution to the wind at times, at 2-1 we were going out, so stick on grealsh, sterling sooner.

Also England need to realise Rice is a mid prem player nowhere near as good as is made out because he has a good game against palace or southampton he ain't good enough to hold the midfield together, probably why gareth had a double pivot of him and philips for so long

It's all a bit samey for me..

Southgate has been England manager for long enough now to have made his mark.

Quarter finals, semi finals, one final, all ultimately lost, looks good on his CV but with the abundance of talent he's had at his disposal to pick from during his tenure, ultimately it's not good enough.

He sets out not to lose rather than to take the game to the opposition and play to win.

One could think that he only changed his lineup to face Wales after the poor showing against the USA because of media pressure.

Would he have picked Foden over Mount otherwise ? I think not..

When Southgate finally goes, who will take him as their manager ?

City, United, Chelsea, Dippers, Arsenal?, I personally can't see that.. he's probably a nice guy but he's not an elite manager.

Can you picture him competing at the top end of the PL with a team he's managing ? He isn't a winner, he got the top job by default and it's long overdue for a change.

The players have kept him in a job and once again it's been proven that he hasn't got the experience, knowhow or winning mentality to go the extra yard to get England over the line.

He'll pitch up at Everton in their shiny new stadium, overseeing mundane football, finishing 15th in the league and being hailed as a saviour..

Happy for a new gaffer

But Southgate has done great for England overall

Who’s the magical next manager that’s gonna get us playing even better and winning major tournaments ?

Wouldn't say he's done great. He's not been a disaster either. Pretty much beat the teams you would expect to beat and lost against tougher opponents.

England has a pool of talent under 25 already regulary playing in top leagues that will be availble for 2024 and 2026

  • Emile Smith Rowe is 22
  • Ivan Toney is 26
  • Dean Henderson is 25
  • Fikayo Tomori is 24
  • Declan Rice is 23
  • Phil Foden is 22
  • Jude Bellingham is 19
  • Mason Mount is 23
  • Bukayo Saka is 21
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold is 24
  • Conor Gallagher is 22
  • Marcus Rashford is 25
  • Reece James is 23
  • Ben Chilwell is 25
  • Aaron Ramsdale is 24
  • Jadon Sancho is 22

Then plenty over 25 that will be still in contention for at least the euros

kane, grealsish, walker, stones, phillips, sterling, maguire, dier, shaw, pickford, pope, maddison.

the decision is whether that young maturing set are gonna just drift along in the same nanner for the next 6 years or their potential be realised fully and is Southgate the man to do it?

some young talent I have missed who should be on too as I got lethargic and U21 and U18 players emerging all with better technical skills, this is a pivital moment in the results of the revamp of english youth development and the wrong choice could fuck up a generations worth of work.

If all were available a team of

ramsdale
james/walker
stones
timori
chillwell
phillips
bellingham
foden
saka
toney/kane
grealish

is a good team to have as a starting oprtion

If he is the best option then you would be as well sticking with Southgate.

I think Henderson was a bit of a mistake last night, he was providing running and overlaps like he usually does but more quality is needed and that's Southgates issue. He wanted someone who is half 6 and half 8 but Henderson isn't great at either roles. England were able to overload on saka and Henderson's side because France overcompensated on fodens side, it needed more quality in the middle and on the other side. The right play would have been to move Bellingham back and bring foden inside to cause panic, I'd have got grealish in on the left because he attracts players even more. Southgate has done well but his main issue has and always will be tactical naivety. Imho that is a crime given that at one point we had every one of the best managers in the world in the PL and still at least have the top two best.

He chose Henderson for running and pressing, and tbf to the guy he was doing it just like he does at Liverpool, but he was doing it alone. You have to commit to something, if you're going to press then Southgate needs to instruct everyone to. It's those small details that take you over the line in these types of games, but it's something that Southgate has always lacked. Just like the Italy final, we came up short.

The only reason he got the job was because of the Fat Sam debacle. His CV is empty, nothing of any note as a player or manager. In the years he's been there he's beaten low ranked teams and no one else.
Even when he ditches that wingback,5 at the back nonsense he's got 2 defensive midfielders in his 433.
How can Slabhead play every game for England yet can't get a game in a shite rag side, the ability of a park footballer.
Impossible for him to react tactically to the opponents whether we're winning or losing, also substitutions are usually like for like and too late.
I want a manager that will at least have a go, I despair if he's still in the job at the Euro's.
