Gout

The doctor should, I say should, recommend a blood test between flare ups. There's no use testing during an attack as the acid is no longer excessive in your blood by that point, it has crystallised in the joints. It was the third doctor I saw who told me this, the first two just advised rest and to go to A&E if it got bad. Wankers.

I started on Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother) after my last attack (a 4 week flare up last summer) and so far, fingers crossed, nothing this year, other than the feeling of it starting a couple of times but then not worsening. Aldi and Lidl sell their own versions of ACV much cheaper than Holland and Barrett.
How much acv do you drink per day bud?

Eating 10 cherries a day reduces chances of gout attacks by 35%, and more concentrated cherry juice increases that percentage.

The antioxidant, anthocyanin, which reduces uric acid build up, is highest in cherries (but also high in pomegranates).

Hope you get some relief mate, luckily I’ve not had a serious attack for years due to Allopurinol and drinking the right amount of water, never forget Gout is a form of Arthritis so there is no stigma unless of course you are a red meat eating, Port guzzling Eton educated **** but I doubt many blues fit that Demographic, maybe worsleyweb but I doubt Eton would have entertained him.

Update on this, my appointment was actually a phone one, only found out by checking the NHS app the day before.

Sent for a x-ray on my toe and a 'healthcheck' as I'd not been to a doctor since 2016.

Colesteral .4 over what it should be but had been eating poorly for the 3 weeks prior due to life....house a tip with builders in, I'd had more takeaways in the 3 weeks than I'd had since Covid began.

Nurse tried to talk me into statins but declined when she rang me with results.

When I went for the x-ray the operating lady showed me a bone spur on my toe which she said is the likely issue.

2 weeks later, text not a call from doctor to say he dosen't think it's gout & I should take Ibrophine...so 6/7 weeks, a few boxes ticked and no resolution.

Am due in for my flu jab next week, I'm going to have words.

I never seem to get any satisfaction from the doctors, this is only the third time I've messed with them in 10 years....

It's back ! Had a flare up a few weeks ago even though I'm on Allopurinol. Calmed it down with a week on Colchicine. It's come back with a vengeance, what a Dumbo, had a few glasses of red wine and nice piece of steak last night. Mr Dillon ! Mr Dillon.

As has been said, Narproxen (sp) is your friend to help with pain.

Drink untolds of water to flush things through.

DON'T start taking Alipurinol during an attack as it can make it worse - Alipurinol is for prevention, it isn't a cure.

I've not contributed in this thread for a good few years, but still get attacks every so often despite the alipurinol I've been prescribed - when it happens, I do all the things I've suggested above, to get through it.

As a sufferer for years, I get it in my toe, the side of my foot, my ankle........it's ridiculous.

And as has been said by others on here, for ignorant folk who don't suffer with it who put it down to "eating venison and drinking port" they couldn't be more wrong.

Best advice I ever had from a doctor was from a doctor who suffered with gout himself.
He told me that yes, your diet may be a major factor in attacks.
But research into gout has shown that it can be hereditary, it can be brought on by stress, there are many factors which contribute to attacks.

He went on to say drinking water is key and to eat rich food/drink alcohol in moderation as if you cut out everything that is bad for you, you'd just be miserable.

I don't wish gout on anybody - but there is a small part of me that would like everybody to get it just once in their lives so they can see just how painful it f**kin is!!

If you’re on Allopurinol and you still get it occasionally you need to up the dosage.

Any sufferers? I’ve been lucky so far but have two guys on my crew that are presently dealing with flare ups, sounds miserable
It's good living that does it, pay the fuckers half what they're on now and keep them out the pub and it'll soon clear up.

Got gout in my big toe for the first time ever. Started coming on yesterday and now hurst like a bastard.

Suggestions please blue brothers
Holland & Barrett sell a concentrate of Black Maraschino Cherries. You use it like a cordial and dilute with water to drink a glassful. It flushes the Uric Acid out of your system naturally.
It worked for me quickly the one time I had the misfortune to suffer it. Money well spent, trust me.

Not had a bout for few years, change of diet, more water and glass of cherry juice in morning seems to have helped me

I used to suffer gout on a regular basis.
A mate of mine who also suffered told me his Doctor had recommended Allopurinol so I went to my Docs and she put me on 300 mg daily.
Never had an attack since but as an earlier poster said, it doesn’t cure it if you have it at the moment , in fact it would make it worse.
You have to wait a few weeks since your last attack.
Touch wood I have not had an attack in the last 10 years, but I will be on it for life, it’s not something you can take occasionally.

I recently had an attack of gout in my right wrist.
I was shocked as I thought you only got it in your feet!
Anyway it's gone away (for now) after a 4 day course of tablets and some alteration to my diet. (Reduce your pastry intake I was told).
Good luck to the other sufferers on here.
