I'm sad she is gone but can understand why. This from the FT does have a ring of a truth:

But above all this is the independence issue. Only Westminster can grant another referendum and it has refused to do so, arguing that only nine years have passed since the last and rejecting the argument that Brexit had created a material change of circumstances. Sturgeon, wisely, refused to support an illegal vote but, against Tory resolve, she was unable to force the issue. Even when a majority of seats at the Scottish elections were won by parties supporting independence, then UK prime minister Boris Johnson refused to give way. Subsequent wheezes failed to launch. A new set of policy documents making the case did not generate much new enthusiasm. A legal challenge on the right to hold a vote was defeated. Her last plan, to declare the next Westminster elections a de facto referendum, was deeply flawed and widely opposed even within the SNP — a Labour revival would probably have seen a loss of seats.

Anybody that thinks the independence issue is going to disappear with Sturgeon is sadly misguided. It won't. A situation where there is no legal way to allow Scotland to have self determination is unhealthy in the extreme and let us hope that it does not have unhealthy or illegal consequences. There will be turmoil in Scottish politics over the next few months and I can only see Labour as being gifted an opportunity. Whilst that might deliver the next general election to them, it will not resolve the issue of a deeply divided union.
 
I will reserve judgement on her being a truthful and honourable politician until we hear what if any action the police inquiry into her recommends.

She leaves under a huge cloud very much of her own making I’m afraid.
 
I'll miss her, schemie looking little thing in a posh frock. If it turns out she isn't mired in corruption and scandal then I hope she returns to politics or maybe some sort of liaison role with the EU.

It could be many years until that happens and, in the meantime, she has served her country rather well. Some will welcome her going because they think it serves their end (preservation of the Union) and that everything will now be alright. Perhaps it will, or perhaps it will not. Perhaps they will choose someone now who is less inclined to follow the rule of law and who is bent on taking a more confrontational stance.

Scotland might not be able to afford the loss of her experience but down here but we would be able to rock from one crisis to another without her hand on the tiller.
 
I disagree with virtually all her politics, including independence. Nevertheless, I‘ve always regarded her as a cut above most politicians in terms of vision, integrity and common touch.

I’m therefore surprised that she’s shown such lack of judgement here in letting some crazy woke cause sabotage a liferime’s work pursuing independence.

Hope she comes back in some capacity or it will be a waste of talent.

She said that she would remain in politics (as an msp) and would continue to work for independence (whatever that means). That all presupposes that she will emerge relatively unscathed from the current stuff.

How can you type positively about someone who wants to break Scotland away from England - it is a crazy idea. Might have worked in the 1970s - just after oil was discovered in the North Sea, but now? not so much. It amuses me to the max that she has fallen on the alter of culture-wars/woke nonsense, I hope the worm has turned on this one.

And as regards your other point, whatever happened to Ruth Davisdson? She was a person of real talent - will she ever come back?
