Liverpool (H) | Post-Match Thread

I think tbf, during Liverpool’s period of dominance, from 1976 to 1990, the team towards the end of that period was far more exciting and attacking than those towards the start and the middle. Barnes, Beardsley, Rush, Daglish, (C) Molby, Johnson and Walsh were all exciting attacking players.

And John Aldridge is a ****.

That's because you can't remember ..as you 've admitted
No need to get shirty, lol

Well without checking I think I said “It was a long time ago and I was young” Not that I don’t remember. But anyway. I wish they were a bit more negative during that five year spell at Maine Road that I vividly remember where they Played 5, Won 5, For 20, Against 0.

They used to love coming to Maine Road in that era (except Boxing Day 1985). This was the days before uniform pitch sizes and they loved the wide open spaces of the Maine Road pitch.

Not sure your stats are quite correct though, as we sometimes scored the odd goal in those drubbings.

Remember it well. Showed his class when he was crying on the pitch at the end and his Ireland teammate David O Leary broke off from celebrating to console him. Only for him to look up and tell him to fuck off.

He’s also probably one of the most overrated footballers in history. You hear him talked about as a legend and a great. The reality is that apart from two years standing in for Ian Rush when he went on holiday to Italy, he spent virtually all the rest of his career in the lower leagues.
He's a legend on Merseyside

For Tranmere Rovers

Well I can’t guarantee anything these days as far as the old memory goes and it’s too late for me to be arsed checking. But I’m almost sure that over a five year period the results at Maine Road were:

0-3
0-5
0-4 X3

Just checked. From 1978-1983 it was

0-3
0-5
0-4 x2
1-4

The 1-4 was in 1978, and I’m pretty sure we scored first (remember watching it in MoTD as an eight year old). This was the game I was thinking of when I talked of the odd goal.

Can’t be any other period with relegations and moving grounds meaning we never played five games in five seasons against them at Maine Road ever again.

So you don't remember Clemence rolling the ball out to Neal.neal 5 yard pass to Hughes.hughes to Thompson Thompson to Kennedy Kennedy back to Clemence..and repeat...like you say you were young.
this often happened in tricky away matches to quieten the home crowd and take the sting out the game.
No one is denying they had good attacking players too in those days,...that's not the point, they bored the pants of many football fans .with negative tactics which involved back pass after back pass to Clemence.
Before the rule change.
And like another poster has said, since the change they struggled to win the league
Funny that.
Puts tin hat on, a bit like watching current Pep City then? :+)

Another self-correction - we did play them five times (plus) consecutively at Maine Road again - from 1989 to 1996, but that run of results from 1978 to 1983 is undoubtedly the one you were referring to, especially at there was at least one win (1992) and one draw (1996) in that sequence.

I remember that me and our kid used to call it the spider and the fly tactic ! Bore the shit out of whoever they were playing and draw more opposition players further forward to try and stop it then bang ball over the top and before you knew it ball was in the back of your net ! They did have some quality players though.

Those were horrible years! and I remember them too, altho we did score at least once at Maine rd. 20-2 would be more accurate iirc

Thats how i remember it too.
The attacking quality of Liverpool during that era is beyond doubt
Some great players, but the back four, keep ball bollocks was also a primary feature ,as I said esp away games to silence the home crowd.

I can fully understand why some don't remember this tactic.
It wasn't just done to draw the oppennent in,..it was done to kill the game dead, waste time and frustrate the oppennent..Ray .Clemence took an age to pick the ball up,roll it a little in front, and then bowl it 5 yards to Neal the right back...

Saw everyone one of that terrible run. My old man was a proper football fan not as partisan as todays crowd tbf (incl me). Got me to justvkeep following Ray Kennedy stroll imperiously round the park and Kenny Dalglish's strange but effective 'arse' technique

A little bit further down the line but didn’t likkle Michael Owen not have a habit of pulling his hamstring, being out injured for a few months & his comeback game was against us & he scored a HT, sure it happened more than once
