Wonderful bit last night was how when he won the header and came crashing down from a great height, he never once took his eye off the ball. He watches it all the way onto Haaland’s foot as he is falling and is still watching it through the legs of others when he’s crashed on the ground.

Several of us predicted this exact eventuality (that Stones would overtake Van Dijk as the better defender) a few years ago and were shouted down.

I am one that thinks Van Dijk was already on the decline before the Pickford injury and, if not for his own injuries, Stones would have overtaken him even earlier.

I always had confidence Pep could turn Stones in to one of the best defenders in the world.

While it definitely wasn't everyone,his off field activity and constant injuries were a real concern.

Let's just be happy it's all worked out tremendously.

Yeah I was in that thread sticking up for him daily . People wanted him at arsenal for £15 million lol.

Pep made it very clear with that early sub just how much he rates him and relies on him.

None of them could come close to doing what John as achieving in the game right now. Christ even Vinny can't do what this guy can on the ball.

This guys got to be one of the greatest English defenders of all time.
