finally someone that gets it! exactly this. it also means we can have more risky players on the pitch since we are counter resistent with rice, imagine foden, haaland and like a leao on the break with kdb feeding them ball... reason we cant play like this now is becuz we are vulnerable in transition
Yup. Plus we would have the following list of potential players for the "back 5": Walker,Akanji,Stones,Dias,Ake,Gvardiol,Rodri Rice. Do you know how flexible that can make us at the back?

We could play so many build up shapes like the 3-2, 4-2(de-zerbi like), 2-3 etc etc.

Combinations like

Rodri/Rice-------------Rice/Stones
Ake/Gvardiol----Dias/Stones/Akanji-----Stones/Akanji/Walker

And coming back to your point about transitions, I always felt that in previous seasons pep wasn't as assured on his defense and was always making tweaks and tactical shifts to mitigate our defensive frailties as much as possible. This season is probably the first where I feel that he genuinely feels confident in our defense. It helps that we've seemed to depart from defensively deficient inverted fullbacks like Zinchenko and Cancelo and replaced them with basically pure CB's.

Also our front 5 if we can also get a new winger could be like:

Grealish/Foden/Winger---------Haaland/Alvarez---------Mahrez/Foden/Winger/Silva

Gundo*/Silva-------------------KDB/Alvarez/Foden

*If Gundo goes then possible new CM.

How much do you think we can bring in total if we sell Laporte, Cancelo, and possibly Phillips IF Pep has decided he's not able to step up, plus possibly some youngsters? Im thinking: Laporte(£50M) Cancelo(£55M) Phillips(£35M) Total= £140M.

Say we decided to let Gundo go this summer along with players mentioned above, then we decide to get a new CB, DM,CM and winger. Rice probably around £80M, Gvardiol £85M, Winger (£55M) , New CM(£70M) Total spend= £290M

Net spend would be 290-140= £150M. Also, wonder if we receive a percentage for any sale for someone like Lavia who it seems likely could be sold this summer.

Idk I'm just thinking out loud at the moment.

crazy thing is 4-5 players would literally be able to play across the 5 block... absolutely crazy.

we dont even need another cm (yet) if we get rice assuming we keep 1 of bernardo or gundo. if we get a winger then grealish/foden/alvarez will prolly be moved inside and it doesnt matter if theres less control given the solidity at the back. or we could go for a cheap cm/cam like maddison just for dynamics. seems rice AND a starting calibre cm would be overkill.

but hopefully city can get a high volume g/a winger cuz i really feel thats the only element city are lacking.... (leao is the dream, but unlikely)

i think ur abit too optimistic with the sales, given how shit we sell id be surprised if we got more than 110mil for all 3 lmao

Regarding the Bellingham deal.. I'm actually happy either way if we know now instead of later.

I would be gutted if it turned out like Kane or Cucu where we were hoping for the whole summer that they'd come..

City tend to identify alternatives really well..
Mahrez wasn't our #1 choice
Rodri wasn't our #1 choice
Dias wasn't our #1 choice
Haaland wasn't our #1 choice

So even if Jude chose Real.. okay no problem.. lets move on and get our summer dealings stuff done early even if its not with our original #1 target.

Isnt there thread about neymar yet. I m sure neymar camp is in contact with man city. Last year they did. Now they are desperate to leave. What better club than us.
I m not sure we need him and of course messi.

What do you mean Haaland Rodri and Mahrez where not first choice

I think he means Kane, Jorginho and Sanchez.

But all three are that good that it probably made it easier for us to walk away from those other deals. Or we’d have got them anyway. Can’t imagine we’d have turned our noses up at Haaland regardless of the squad.

I’m not sure how we can’t now always get our first choices.
We have moved on, we are now serial league winners, regulars in the later stages of the Champions League.Have the best manager, an exceptional training ground.
A stadium that is about to be redeveloped.
We pay exceptional wages and have a massive transfer budget.
Surely with that package we attract our first choice almost every time.

We tried to sign De Jong initially, then turned to Jorginho. Rodrigo was our 3rd option

I keep sounding like a broken record saying this but imagine we replace Laporte with Gvardiol and get Rice as well. Imagine our back 5(3-2 structure) of:

Rodri Rice

Gvardiol. Dias. Stones.

It keeps me up at night sometimes thinking about how good that is. We would never lose a game again. The team would eat transitions from other teams for lunch.
Is that much better than...

Rodri Stones
Ake Dias Akanji

(Plus I still think Laporte is a great asset if he was ever to play again)

I thought we turned to other options the following season so it’s not really comparable. I think Haaland was first choice but not available at the time

Don’t think it’s any better, certainly not better enough to justify spending whatever Rice would cost.

What are the chances of us signing Trent and converting him into a midfielder? He would immense under pep
