Ivan Toney

They’ve not released details yet but I’d be amazed if there was any suggestion that he was trying to influence the outcome of any of his bets. Or the ban would have been much longer.

He was a lower league player for the majority of the time frame. Not an excuse. He knew the rules. But probably just sat at home, bored on a Sunday, having a bet on whatever games were on TV.
I'm sure they've previously stated that he didn't bet on or against any of the teams he played for.

SIMPLE if you are found guilty of betting on games then it should be all over with any involvement in the game,

an 8 months ban does nothing as a deterrent in the future for players wanting to gamble, it's only seen as a slap on the hands by some age permitted, he's only 27 and will have good 4 or 5 years in the game
I'm not sure an 8 month ban from all football related involvement 'does nothing'. He'll only be allowed to start training at the club from September and not allowed to play until mid January. This will be from any club worldwide BTW.

8 months ban is a bad injury in a timescale, you know get your head down and train your time will come again

I've had time to think about this and I am disgusted at the English FA at their harsh and unwarranted 8 month ban for Ivan Toney for multiple gambling. 8 months? Really? Sure he made mistakes. It looks very much like he has a gambling addiction and he should receive medical support for it. Not crushed like this. What damage will being banned especially for so long do to his mental health?

I personally think that a product that relies heavily on gambling investment, is missing the problem.

On the other hand, Toney knew the rules. He chose to break the rules by betting on football, and he shouldn’t be exempt from consequences.

The nature of the ban can be argued about when compared with bans for racism and physical assaults, but he’s actually got off pretty well here.

Bradley Wood, for example, was found guilty of spot fixing in the National League and got a six year blanket ban. Toney got to play almost all of the remainder of the season, have his best ever campaign, and cop a ban that sees 3 months of competitive football inactivity. In context, he’s done alright, I’d say.

So it turned out he bet on his own team to lose games he wasn't playing in, and made other bets in games he was playing in.

I can't believe he's only got 8 months.

Can't believe he only got 8 months if knew betting on his own team. Saying he wasn't in a position to influence match may be correct, but he would have known about everything else, little niggles certain plays had, what players were likely starting etc. Bit of insider trading going on there.

He also knew it was not allowed and took steps to conceal it, then tried to destroy the evidence and then lied to the FA about it, which blows up many of the defences put forward on his behalf by journalists.
