someone has just been reading the wish list off here!
I don't see how he fits in here but is a great player. I think its a classic case of "City don't have a left back they must want one!"

If we continue with our current system we'd be all over Gvardiol & Guerreiro to partner Ake/Akanji.

If we are in the market for a full back I believe it will be to one day replace Walker as Lewis is great but may end up more central.

Think you are correct with Lewis....he lacks that bit of physicality to play as a tradtional fullback but he has the technical ability to play more central and is perfect for peps system at present. However when we lose walker in a season or two we will need another type of fullback to compliment Lewis

I think Ake has more than earnt his place at fullback for our team.....for me he was player of the season if you take out the obvious two in Haaland and Rodri...his al around game developed and he has laways been an excellent defender both in the air and on the ground..... Guerreiro will have to earn his place.

Gvardiol Ive only seen him against us and he looked poor and slow....but our attack can do that to anyone so hopefully he is another Akanji/Dias type signing

Why would Phillips leave?

If he’s been watching Rodri when he’s sat on the bench…. He will realise he ain’t getting much game time. Rodri is far and away the
best DM in football…. Better than that other fella we let go…. Kante.

100% agree. Guerreiro has also been playing centrally so gives us flexibility there as well. Gvardiol is highly rated and I guess if its not him its someone similar in a young left football high potential CB. Good thing about Gvardiol is he could also play left back and would be very similar to Ake in our team if good enough.

The question is who does replace Walker. When the time comes of course he's still got plenty in the tank.

Not entirely sure Pep trusts him
I think this is it. We've seen Pep play Lewis this year but reluctant to play Phillips. Same with Gomez we had Bernado at LB at one point. Clearly good players but something not quite right about them at City. Cant get every transfer right, especially when at our level. Rodri is the best at what he does but we need someone to pick up the slack when he needs a rest or worse case gets injured. even if a hybrid midfielder that could play alongside him if needed. I don't think Phillips offer us that. Every time I've seen him for us he looks like he doesn't want the ball.

Why would Phillips leave?

Phillips may well want to stay to prove himself but so far he’s had 2 premier league starts in dead rubbers and barely featured otherwise. He was signed to cover Rodri but Pep played Gundogan rather than Phillips.

For me he’s been the most disappointing player we have signed since Pep arrived. When he’s played he looks uncertain, doesn’t know where to be and he seems to lack defensive awareness.

There’s a good player in there but he’s not suitable as a DM for us so it’s hard to see where he fits. I think he’d be better off moving on to the likes of West Ham and get 30+ league starts as Rice’s replacement.

Maybe he wants more game time or the the club don’t feel he can do what they thought he could mate? When Rodri needed resting it was Gundo who stepped in rather than Phillips? Not entirely sure Pep trusts him
It's hard to tell with philipps, lots of injuries but has tge type of injuries kept him away from tge training ground picking up Peps style of play? I don't know, but the lack of trust pep has must be a longer term worry for him. Game time will be very limited.

If pep is going to stick with this 'double pivot' with a CB stepping in and out of midfield then I'm not sure philipps will be a solution. Would city buy philipps this summer to complement this new style, I don't think so

Good post mate that. It’s obvious Pep doesn’t feel confident with him starting and maybe with a premier league (and hopefully more!) then he and the club may agree it’s best he moves on

I know that quite a few players have had first season struggles at City, but Phillips would be the biggest turnaround of the lot if he came good next season. Kalvin Phillips and Sergio Gomez have a lot to do in season 2 if they stay. Phillips obviously cost a lot more though.

Who was the last player we sold within a year of signing? Angelino maybe, and he was bought back as much to cash in on the buy-back.

People were saying similar for Rodri after his first season, not good enough, pep doesn't trust him, will want to play more, used gundogan more, he has to sit and watch dinho etc. And Grealish. And Bernardo. And Mahrez. And Ake.

A player would have to be either really bad, or disruptive, to be sold after their first season. 42m is not a fee the club would just forsake, he'll het another season at least I think.

Why would Phillips leave?
Good question. First of all, any player that ends up signing for an elite club will be used to having been the best player for every team they ever played for from being a youngster. This brings with it a certain amount of belief and self confidence which are absolutely essential to perform at your best in any sport. Then you rock up at an elite club and you turn up at training and the level is far beyond anything you've ever experienced. The lad said himself that he asked himself the question 'what am I doing here?' This has got to affect your belief in your own ability to reach these levels, which in turn is a self-fulfilling prophecy as this lack of belief affects your performance.
Then, there's the Pep factor. This guy has worked with some of the greats and will want to improve your game taking you out of the comfort zone which has served you well in the past. This also leads to a certain amount of self doubt as you ask yourself the question whether you have this in your locker. You find yourself on the bench, which is a new experience, and you see players getting selected ahead of you who aren't even specialists in your position. Maybe in other teams players could tell themselves that the coach doesn't get you, but this is Pep Guardiola we're talking about here, so another major blow to the ego.
So, what do you do? An opportunity arises to sign for a mid table club where you know your skillset will be more aligned with the requirements of the manager. Maybe you take that opportunity?

Kalvin Phillips’ one decent attribute is the long diagonal pass. We don’t ever use that (Except Walker from time to time). It was a terrible transfer by us. It was lazy.
Im convinced the Pep/Bielsa relationship got Phillips the move. He will never be good enough for us in that Rodri role.
Phillips plus cash for Rice was the obvious choice but if they can offload him they should look at Zubimendi, Lavia or Palhinha to replace Kalvin. Never happening though. But i agree that Phillips probably wont work out. Rodri is just too good.

I think you’re right, not playing will hamper England chances too. I rate Philips as a player but just don’t think he’s suitable for what we need

With previous targets not kicking off right away (ie Cancelo, Jack or even Mahrez) you could see the level of quality on and off when playing... I just cannot see how Phillips can fill the gap Rodri leaves behind when resting... I do think it's time to move on and try again.

In fairness to Rodri, he had over 20 league starts in his first season. The only one you mention with anything comparable is Ake who had 8 starts first season. Phillips has had 2, yes he’s been injured but he’s also been criticised by Pep for being overweight.

I don’t mean to harp on about Phillips but I just don’t see how he fits and the fact that Pep clearly doesn’t trust him puts a huge strain on Rodri. The goal Leicester scored against us recently showed how poor his defensive reading is, playing Iheanacho onside that interfering with Ederson’s save.

As said there’s a good footballer in Phillips just not one that fits at City.
