Fantastic player, two other Italians who were amongst the best defenders in the world, Cannavaro and Maldini, the latter played in the 1994 European Cup/Champions League final for AC Milan in the most comprehensive victory I’ve ever seen (in a final) where they destroyed a very good Barcelona side 4-0 and took their foot off the gas for the second half. Playing for Barca that night were a certain Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain.

Just as an aside, Cannavaro captained Italy to win the 2006 World Cup, in that team was Simione Perrotta. He became the second footballer to win the World Cup after being born in my home town, Ashton-under-Lyne, the first was Geoff Hurst.
Was Jimmy Armfield born in Ashton also.? Hence the statue out side Curzon Ashton stadium.Still 3 from the now Tameside

It's hard for me to get too excited for this transfer because while he's an excellent player, I am completely happy with our current group of defenders.
I can see that but first he’s 21, his level when Stones is 33/34 will be amongst the best.We could get 13 years from him.
Second when Stones doesn’t play, especially if its a few games due to injury Gvardiol is capable of the CB/DM hybrid, or LB /DM hybrid meaning less need to change the system.

Denton, but as you say still Tameside, did he play in the 66 tournament? I know he didn’t play in the final.
