My brother lived in Oz from 1967 to about 2000, with a one-year break in London from 1972-73. Knows it well. Exclusively Sydney and Melbourne, I believe. He always told me that the King's Cross neighbourhood of Sydney was rough as a badger's arse when he first went out. Interesting that that corresponded to London's King's Cross for a long, long time. Has the Sydney KC been yuppified, somewhat? The London one certainly has.
Is Brisbane where the “Gabbatoir” is? Or is that Adelaide? I always forget. I just know that England never win there, for some reason.
More recently, about fifteen years ago, some friends went across country to Perth. They said that they stopped off in one or two mining towns inland that were exactly like the Wild West in about 1870 (as you see it in westerns). Really, really rough. No women except the ladies of the town, of course.

By the way, the closest I ever got to being attacked in London was when I was surrounded by four drunk, belligerent Glaswegians (maybe they weren't Glaswegians, I'm just assuming it, wonder why) who definitely wanted a fight with me. One of them got in my face and kept saying, “Hey yuuu… the big ****… tek me oon! The big ****… tek me oon!” I was going out for the evening with my girlfriend. It was a tricky, tricky situation. For a second I thought, “Now how much do I love this girl?”. I was quite fast on my feet at the time…

Yeah Kings Cross Sydney is well dodgy at night.
I wouldn't walk around after dark.

Gabba is Brisbane.

The outback towns are like the old west but regional people are usually very good people. Always time for a natter.
Id like to move to Cairns in the tropics but wifey won't hear of it.

“I’m dreaming of a White Christmas” takes on a whole new meaning in some places along the lakes!!

The lake effect snows along the Great Lakes can be absolutely brutal. We have avoided a second home in Michigan for that very reason!!

The sunsets over Lake Michigan (looking towards the west from MI) can be spectacular! Multi-million dollar views in most cases! However, for 3 months of the year it’s almost unlivable, because getting in or out requires “equipment!”

The southern shore of Lake Erie is similar, because when those cold northern winds blow over the warmer lake, it’s a snowmaking machine with the pump turned up to 11!

There are many lake effect, snow belt cities that get far more winter snow than the famous ski resorts out west!!

Here is a picture of it coming across the lake with the wind…

Know some people who are American, but very, very Anglophile and tuned in to Europe. After many years in London, they moved back to Chicago and bought a very nice apartment, with huge windows overlooking the lake, in an architecturally valuable, listed building (Mies van der Rohe, would you believe?).
Get this: they bought that because they couldn't afford their first choice — a decent sized flat in London!
Anyway, my main point is this: last time I saw them, they'd just been through one hell of a winter. They said that it got so seriously cold outside that they literally did not leave the apartment for a week, just living on stocked up food. It was about 20°C below outside, but the wind chill factor coming off the lake made it feel positively Antarctic.
Anyway, my heart does not bleed for them. They're doing alright. They also own an apartment in Avignon, which they fly into from time to time. So there are consolations for the continental climate…

Plus, I just bought a 4BR/2BR lake house getaway 2hrs west of Chicago, so no chance I’d need a third “lake” house in Gary…even with your money!!

Stayed in Bulawayo for a few nights when i was there,it was a stopover between Harare and Vic Falls,had a great one night stand there,way back in 1993.

One of my mates has just done a trip,flew to Darwin and over land to Alice Springs and then on to Adelaide,where he flew back home, he said when he was in Alice Springs,if you went to buy alcohol,the security in the shop.was bazaar,they'd ask you where you have come from,where you're going ,what hotel,where you are going to drink the alcohol you were in there buying,it put him off in the end.
 
Our next door neighbour was broken into 12-30pm last night and another neighbour last week, so I’d say this place is f***ed.
A Police printed note through the door this morning asking for info. My daughter caught the two (scrotes) lads (checking all the cars and houses out.

I’m thinking we need a video camera now it’s getting rough outside inxtalled a couple of extra looks as well

I enjoyed my visit to Alice, it's an interesting place but the town has a big problem these days with alcohol and it has to be said it's mostly indigenous people. The liquor stores (in conjunction with council and Police) are trying to curb the problem by agreeing between themselves to only sell alcohol to people who weren't gonna sit on street corners and get drunk, which leads to all kinds of shit.
 
Has anybody mentioned Accrington yet? On Death Row already with Pubs and Shops shutting all over and then COVID kicked in big time. The folk are fine and keep their heads up but the Town is an absolute shithole

Yeah he said something about that to me,but he also said all the questions and scrutiny didn't stop
people from buying alcohol , he said drunkeness was rife there and people would just drive to local towns
where they could buy it easilly,it was just a bit of a shock to him when he first got questioned by security guards
in shops selling alcohol.
