Why doesn't nord VPN work? I'm in fuerteventura at the minute and still can't get on Skybet or use Sky go or get on certain websites (nothing dodgy, all the porn sites are fine) even though I'm using a VPN, feel a bit cheated really as the lads on the bluemoon podcast were saying how great it was or am I doing something wrong. It only has about 4 uk servers to connect to or is there more?

I'm just trying the free version of ProtonVPN myself but from what I've been reading, Sky et al can block anyone using VPN services from getting around the regional restrictions. It looks a bit hit and miss depending on what you're trying to access.

Have you tried a different UK server? (presuming you can choose)

Some companies block vpn ip's from using their services as Centurions notes. I would think big gambling sites do this. Nord is a big vpn company so their ip's would get blocked pretty quick. There are probably laws about allowing people from outside the UK using UK betting sites so they have to block them.

I live in Spain but use a superb UK based IPTV provider who has simply never mentioned vpn to me.

Do I need a VPN?

This is correct.

I use controld on the full control plan. Rather than changing your ip it’s your dns.

I don’t know the rules here so I will say it lets you seem like you are in the uk for your skygo when in Spain etc once set up. Or vice versa.

It’s not hard to use but it takes some setting up using a control panel on the site, once set up all your devices can be set to different country’s for different apps. My shield thinks it’s in the uk for most, and abroad for others

Do these VPNs work on Smart TVs?
The VPN would have to be installed on the router obviously but otherwise, yes. In fact if it's installed on the router then everything goes through the VPN. My knowledge pretty much ends there BTW so your inevitable follow up question will need to answered by someone else :)

Edit: in fact, https://nordvpn.com/blog/setup-vpn-router/

If you just download the Nord app onto a Smart TV is that enough? Or does it need to be installed “on” the router?

I know this reply is a bit late ;-)

But there's two other things that can block access, which you might need to mess with.

1. (Most important) Turn off Location Services on your phone before trying to connect. Probably best to turn that off, reboot and then connect Nord and then try accessing Skybet again.

2. Sometimes your DNS servers can give the game away, so there's different Nord DNS servers you can use: 103.86.99.100 and 103.86.96.100. I don't know about iphones but on Android, go into Settings, search for DNS and then enter these addresses. And then reboot and try again again. It's probably worthwhile clearing your browser cache as well, since Sky may have by now given you a cookie that says your abroad and blocked.

I have Nord VPN but have been able to use Sky Bet in Spain. From memory I think I had to use the sky bet web page in my browser rather than the SKY BET app.

I highly doubt you could install the NordVPN on any smart TV, you may see it in the Play Store perhaps if it's an Android TV but I don't think it will install.

If you can then yes, that would do you.
You can and I have, mate!

Just wondering if that’s enough or do I need to download it onto the router as well though?

You surprise me then. But no, you don't need it on the router as well as you'd then be redirecting your traffic all over the place and there would be a performance hit. Having it just on the router would mean that everything is covered however.

Took up the Nord VPN offer but very disappointed. The main reason was to be able to use Bet365 abroad but it actually blocks you from using Bet365 in the UK. All their support could suggest was to try different servers. Complete waste of time. Have had to request a refund. Anybody else have these issues?

Yes. Bet365 are very savvy with VPNs and want to ensure you aren't using one to bypass area-restrictive laws on gambling. So they are aware of the IP addresses that VPNs use and they block them. It keeps them legal and thwarts your attempts at being naughty.

I spend a lot of my time in S Asia and couldn't get any VPN to work with 365. About 4yrs ago I got in touch with 365 customer support and they said the best thing to do was to try accessing my account from my location, worked perfectly without a VPN. Tried in several countries since, no problems.
If you are being naughty, but not illegally so, you will probably need a different ISP & device for each account. ;)
