I think you can still have the long contracts but can only amortise the fee over a max of 5 years

You can give a player as long a contract as you want. The 5 year limit is to do with amortisation, as Chelsea were trying to exploit a loophole in FFP by giving everyone an 8 year contract.

Fee was always going to be lofty anyway but this Caicedo business will have inflated it even further unfortunately.

Why? Caicedo was one of the stand out performers at a team that finished 6th. He's 21 year-old and has four years left on his contract. He's got the potential to be a generational talent, so while he might be a bit pricey, you can understand why. Can anyone say they genuinely thought about Paqueta as a contender for team of the season before we were linked with him the other day? Or even team of the season if we excluded the top four?

I suspect we're interested in Paqueta because we thought we might be able to do it at a decent price. If we can't, we'll walk away. We always do.
