Kalvin Phillips

could of been sharper, but considering the game time hes had with us that is understandable, his problem is hes being judged in a position where we have had ferna and rodri for the last 10 years, he isn't a bad player in fact hes a very decent player and i knew as soon as the whistle went at full time i knew he would be the whipping boy,one annoying part was the newcastle goal although rico made a bit of a hash of it phillips should of got back into the middle , a run of games might do him good(fingers crossed)
People want someone to blame.. we have had plenty down the road. Heck Rodri when he first came, stones, cancelo, etc etc etc.. you are 100% right. He plays a position where we had two really great players. People talk about his futball iq but you can’t sit in the bench that long and come on and be world class. It’s a difficult situation as we can’t afford to give him 3-4 games to get up to speed but that’s what he needs. Then people can judge him

I want him to do well but his stats for this game don't read well:

0/2 tackles won
3/12 ground duals won
0/3 aerial duals won
0/2 successful dribbles

He was fairly accurate with his passing at 91% and made 8 recoveries, but as a whole, just not good enough for this team at this stage.

I don't hate the lad, I don't think he's shit, but he's just not quite at the level for what we need. Not many players are, no shame in that. He wasn't terrible tonight but he wasn't great either and given what his strengths as a player are the fact he got roughed up and bullied in midfield doesn't bode especially well for him.

Rodri, Kova and Nunes all better than him, and frankly I'd increasingly have Rico in that position ahead of him too. He's a better all action box to box than a number 6, but we don't need all action box to box and even if we did Nunes looks better in that role.

I can just picture Txiki watching the game tonight... yes, yes yes, I was right to sign him, oh, no, shit, sorry.

I really wanted it to work for Kalvin Phillips at City but I think tonight's performance was further confirmation that he's just not going to make it here.

Don't see him getting another start now that we're out of the EFL Cup & I think he has to be gone in January or next summer.

Hell I'd rather have Perrone back.. he's looking like a total player over in La Liga.

So tonight was his big chance to prove himself to everyone connected to City and unfortunately he failed to deliver , time to move him on.

I don't think it's just tonight people are basing their opinions of Phillips on!

Tonight should have been a bit of a springboard for him. A bit of a gimme game if you like, no real pressure on him. And he still came up short.

If not tonights game, it must be one of the other half a dozen starts he's had in his entire city career to date.

Us fans haven't seen anywhere near enough of him to have any real opinion of him, yet so many do.

He didn't come up short tonight, he was fine.

lol poor guy, at least he won himself a treble.

He can eventually go back to his childhood club Leeds having that off his chest.

Sometimes I feel that it will be better for him if he plays in a team like Newcastle or Liverpool...

It was a poor signing. Shit happens. Would be interesting to know the reasons why though. He was never a City player and when I say that I mean this version of city. I'll Stick up for him while he wears our shirt though because he's done nothing that makes me think otherwise. I ain't slagging a player off who is unfortunate enough to play for a team who will go down as the best in history. And we will..

I would prefer both Lewis and Gomez ti start ahead of him, fortunately I suspect we'll go with Kovacic as DM as Phillips is not nearly good enough

No doubt it’s Rico’s fault but why is kalvin strolling instead of bursting hugs lungs once he lost his man

Absolutely shocking defending from him. Hes supposed to be a defensive minded player. You think he'd be playing for his spot but to see him stand there and watch the entire play was infuriating. It's like he's on vacation.

Well out of his depth.

He tries.....which is great.....but he lacks the awareness, the anticipation, and the subsequent vision, that makes our players that bit special.

He is never going to find the much needed wavelength and reactive qualities that a midfielder requires in this team.

I genuinely believed he was a much better player than he actually is.

Go on. How many forward passes were successful? I’ll wait.
Why would you spend time waiting for someone else? Why don't you simply analyse the game, base your research on one player if you wish, but actually properly analyse it, tallying all passes, forward, sideways, and back. All I am asking of anyone is to give people a fair, objective analysis. Last night, within minutes, we had people counting his errors and even blaming him for a misplaced Gvardiol pass.
Just for information, because he has played so little for us, stats information is limited. He has played 142 minutes this season, across all competitions. In the whole of last season his pass completion rate was 91%.
Not for one minute am I saying that Kalvin Phillips is the best player we have. I am just asking, just as I did for Grealish, Rodri, Mahrez and others, for him to be given a fair trial. We have a strangely negative approach to selected players, even though they often prove those opinions wrong.

Was happy when he came to us and thought he’d give us another way to play when Rodri was not playing but he is way of our level and weakens us immensely when he plays but I can’t understand how he’d rather sit in a bench and claim trophy’s for himself even though he doesn’t really merit them than move in to a team and really make a difference. His best performance for us has been the johnny stones song sadly .
