Rishi Sunak

He has said he can’t commit to reversing it because it depends on how much of the route is decommissioned and whether land acquired for the project gets repurposed over the next 12 months. If that happens the already high costs would soar further so how could he possibly make the commitment now. Even you should be able to work that out. Or maybe not.

It’s standard shit from this government. When they cancel stuff they make absolutely sure it’s impossible for a future government to resurrect the plans without enormous cost. Cameron started it in 2010 with the Nimrod cancellation when they broke up the completed airframes within weeks rather than put them into storage in case things needed to be reversed.

I hope his authorisation of the sale of land is challenged in court and put on hold. It’s a fucking disgrace that he has nerve to exercise the power that he has to make such a momentous decision when he has no mandate from anyone. No manifesto pledge, no parliamentary debate/vote and not even any mandate for being PM other than by default. A prime minister without a mandate should not be allowed to make such decisions without referring it to parliament.

He’s a long-standing opponent of HS2 and he had ample opportunity to express any preference for the Manchester to Birmingham section to be completed long before Sunak pulled the plug.

He consistently refused to provide this backing, and effectively his position was no different to Sunak’s prior to yesterday’s announcement. What we’ve seen today is frankly bluster, and not credible, but clearly it’s been swallowed up by gullible sorts such as yourself.

Tory boy claims to know about what's credible.

What rubbish.
How could his position be the same as Sunak’s?

It was cancelled on a whim and replaced by a long list of smaller projects that have either already been built, already been authorised or just dreamt up at to he last minute.

Sunak cancelled it because he thought he could squeeze a few votes out of the cancellation and based on previous experience it’s highly likely that we’ll see Tory donors cashing in with decommissioning contracts and through land deals.

Starmer’s job is to hold the government to account, not to make commitments that he can’t guarantee can be kept due to cost uncertainties.

It's the Labour Party conference starting on Sunday. Starmer will have to come up with a hell of a lot more than holding the Government to account.
He will be setting out his vision for the UK under a Labour Government and that will have to include some key policy commitments that will form the basis of the manifesto which Labour will fight the next General Election under.
He knows that he will have to raise his head above the parapet for once and we'll be able to see whether his plans are credible or not.

Again, for the hard of thinking, Starmer could easily have expressed a preference to complete HS2 in full prior to Sunak’s announcement but he consistently refused to do so and avoided the issue like the plague. To then come out today in the press and pretend that he would love to commit to HS2, but can’t now do so because of land being released, is simply not credible. You might also want to ask yourself how pledging to simply continue with the government’s new transport plan is holding the government to account.

The funniest part of his press round today however was the promise to work with the Northern mayors to deliver on transport plans. A vacuous statement of course but also a bit rich given that he clearly hasn’t spoken to Burnham about HS2 recently, given that Burnham didn’t have a clue what Labour’s position was on the issue even though the Conservative Party conference was taking place on his patch.

Hopefully there will be policies and I expect there will be, but he doesn’t have to raise his head too much. He just has to be more credible than this Tory government and frankly he could do that by just doing nothing at all.

Sorry but he can't just stand there and put himself up as the next PM of this country and say next to nothing. I want to hear what he's got to say with an open mind and judge him on his own merits - not just "oh well, Labour can't be any worse than the Tories so we'll have to have them."

He doesn't want to reverse it he has been calling for the project to be cancelled for years.

He was on record as wanting to cancel it in 2015. We’re 8 years on from that with billions more spent. Obviously comics like the Express are going to dig up old stuff like that. It does explain why he’s not been front and centre in the criticism of Sunak as he must have known this stuff would be highlighted by his opponents.

Poor bloke, Starmer living rent free.

So much ammo, and yet what has Starmer done with it today?

Absolutely nothing, other than to tell a few porkies about not being able to reverse the decision on HS2.

Starmer keeping quiet has been great politics - Tories have to invent made up Labour policies and predict what Starmer will do with absolutely nothing to back it up.
Another reason Tories will get spanked next election.

Looking like a big swing to Labour in Rutherglen tonite

It doesn't matter what was said. We are being governed by a bunch of idiots, and I mean that in the sense of the word.

The strongest case economically for HS2 was freeing up capacity between Manchester and Birirmingham. A new line that would provide fast transport for passengers, and allow freight and slower stopping services to operate on existing lines.

Every report into the viability of HS2 supported that, but where did the building start? In London. If you were running a business, it is inconvceivable you would invest your money into a project that would have the lowest return first.

Like I said, we are being governed by idiots, thick twats that have reduced everything in this country to the barest minimum, but let me point this out.

Under the last Labour government, our standard of living improved by the highest margin in our history.

The tories have been in power for nearly 14 years, the economy has stalled, and we are now far worse off than we were when they came to power.

It's not a great achievemet, all things considered.
