That's good news then.I know Franny saw enough of it to approve it. From what I understand he was delighted with the design and plans.
The statue is a great tribute but it permanently irks me that the man who scored two goals to win the league against Newcastle, scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final, and then scored the opening goal in the Cup Winners Cup final, has seemingly been forgotten by the club for his role during our second most successful period as a club. The Bell Lee Summerbee statue has been commissioned, pity only Mike will get to see it...
My Dad always tells me that Neil young should be held in the same regard as the other three. The statue is a great tribute but it permanently irks me that the man who scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final and the opening goal in the Cup Winners Cup final has been forgotten by the club for his role in that front line.
Ironically there is an air of Crosby, Still & Nash (and Young!) about it.My Dad always tells me that Neil young should be held in the same regard as the other three.
He absolutely should. So should record appearance holder Alan Oakes which is why I’d love to see a Hollywood Stars style walkway around the stadium so that every legendary figure can be remembered. My Dad always tells me that Neil young should be held in the same regard as the other three.

Yep. There can only be so many statues and stands named after players but with a walkway every legendary player can be remembered from Jimmy Ross and Billy Meredith to Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva. And Sir Michael of Doyle, Skip etc.
Maybe even a walkway of shame alongside the urinals in the toilets with stars of the likes of Ged Brannan, Sammy McIlroy, Wilfred Bony etcYep. And the Dunnie monster! And Sir Michael of Doyle, Skip etc.
That’s a great idea @Gary James. Plus the ones still around could do a boot print instead of the hand print they do in Hollywood.Yep. There can only be so many statues and stands named after players but with a walkway every legendary player can be remembered from Jimmy Ross and Billy Meredith to Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.
One of the things that came across well at the cathedral today from Jonny’s eulogy was his dad’s sense of humour. Jonny revealed how Franny often told interviewers fake facts like how he could play the piano to classical concert standard and some of these jokes have made it into obituaries. Brilliant.I may need to review my own writing and see if I can spot any Franny windups!
Asa Hartford is the player that sticks out to me as the most underrated of that generation, yeah I know we appreciate how good he was but overall other fans don't see that.
Quite so. I'd also want to add another. We knew how good big Dave Watson was, but I'm not sure the rest of the country got it. Our best centre half before Vinny came along, in my view. Some of us on the Kippax knew him affectionately as “Frankenstein”.
Good call, we can peg Willie Donachie to the list probably too.
There was something energetic about Asa though, a dynamo who always looked like his legs were going 3 times as fast at everyone else around him like a reverse matrix.
It is a great tragedy that that team were not champions. Several times over. Add in the canniness of Tueart, and the brilliant additions of Gary Owen and Pete Barnes, and they really should have won a lot more.
