Young Boys (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

Like Men vs Boys.

It's a difficult scenario when things are so one sided, to derive a) something for the crowd to get up for and b) meaningful performances against weak opposition.

The approach Pep takes regularly is energy conservation, which is sensible. An absolute one-sided stroll. Shame about John Stones (and Akanji too?). The team that finished took a pinball approach to finishing.

Foden was dangerous, Grealish in control and most looked completely comfortable.

I am unsure the Nunes/Kovacic pairing works in a game with more intensity and against better opposition. Something about it lacks control and creativity.
Gave Rodri the night off which will be so crucial as we get to this run of fixtures and xmas. Hopefully with more time on the pitch together, Nunes / Kova will be just fine as they are both good players, just maybe very similar and unsure how to play with each other at the moment.

Frustrating that Stones got injured in a game where we didn’t need to risk him. Let’s hope it’s not too serious.

About as straightforward as you can get and a fairly standard group stage victory.
Young Boys were very limited ,0 shots, 0 corners, they did get stuck in, maybe a bit too much at times!( and their fans certainly were a weird bunch!) The most taxing thing Ederson had to do was get rid of that flare!
Great goals by Foden and Haaland, though we were a bit wasteful afterwards and it would have been nice to bang in a few more (or am I just becoming spoilt/entitled here because we've scored 11 in the last 2 CL games I've been to?)
Foden, Grealish and Lewis impressed me, Kovacic and Nunes still seem to perhaps be 'bedding in'.
Knock out stages secured, new unbeaten record for English team in Europe I believe, ooh, and another lovely light show! The only real downer was the injury to Stonesey.

They struck me as bit fucking odd tbh, Suppose you've got to have something to amuse yourself when you're team is crap but there's a fine line between amusing yourself and being a bunch of weirdos and they crossed it multiple times.
Funniest thing I've seen in a while at Eastlands was the south stand giving their am dram performance a sarcastic light applause like they were at the opera after one of their skits.

Mate, there were little kids crying ,one guy with blood all over his head, yet as you say the stewards and police weren't in the slightest bit interested
Police were absolute cunts last night! Stood by and watched their fans launch all sorts, set off fireworks and smoke bombs, held aloft and done fuck all! One of ours wrongly launched something straight back at them, and 4 of the twats marched in to 111 and physically manhandled him straight out!

It was pretty funny and needed when "what the fucking hell was that?" just wasn't sufficient. It was like they thought they had entered some sort of contemporary dance festival, properly bizarre.

Got almost nothing to say. An incredible win. Young Boys finishing with 0.00 xG says everything you need to know.

This was an unbelievably comfortable victory and it seemed to have a soporific effect on our lads. I think it was hard for many to maintain concentration for anything like 90 minutes and a certain sloppiness did creep in, though we were always in complete control. Even in virtual reverse gear our lads were always far too good and Phil, Erling, Ruben and others were head and shoulders better than the opposition. John Stones is, I believe, the most intelligent player in the world and we must hope his absence is short. He certainly does not suffer from comparison with Beckenbauer. And yet we were wasteful. It is hard to believe that we played 10 men for nearly 40 minutes without scoring - against opponents who were simply out of their depth.

Expected routine win for us, didn't need to break a sweat and the main thing is we are through to the next round.

I just had a quick chat with 5 or 6 YB players in Manchester airport terminal 2 about 15mins ago. They said City were too good, but they didn't seem to be bothered by the result. They are all happy and smiley today. Nice lads.

That's the issue. We've a relatively small squad with exceptional players, hence why there's such a drop off in quality & effectiveness when "good players" like these two & Philips step in.

Scenario: We've an important match to play, & a midfield of Philips, Kovacic & Nunes.

The confidence is draining out of me at the mere thought, because I can't see a goal, a killer pass or intelligent defensive play from any of them.

Which is why we need Kev back asap in the New Year and no more injuries
