Suella Braverman - sacked as Home Secretary (p394)

I don’t mind having a few years of stability.

Agreed but just to get to stability is in itself going to require an awful lot of work. Such have been the last few years it's going to take some real leadership and statesmanship just to undo the damage. I have no idea if Starmer is up to it but I sincerely hope so.

I think Braverman has got exactly what she wanted.
Apparently it was her comments on the homeless that was the last straw, and she knew she was going to be sacked. So she , very publicly, further undermined Sunak and has set out her stall for leadership after the GE.
All this has been a simple rallying cry to the troops.
Something as public as all this is designed merely to gavalnise.

Again, in your opinion.

The reason we were brought out of the EU is because arrogant bastards couldn't keep it to themselves.

This seems a lot like excusing yourself of blame. There were some very arrogant Brexiteers at the time too.

Why should you think calling people who were as arrogant as they were thick had any bearing on the result? Those people were always voting for a shit sandwich.

You may be right, but will the party elect her?
Answer: well, they elected Truss.
Shit, duck for cover.
PS. Aside: I have a lot of family now retired from teaching in Leeds. Truss was thought to be none too bright.

Farage was everywhere and unfortunately was a convincing passionate speaker compared to anyone on the remain campaign. Annoying as fuck looking back, remain were far too complacent just like Hilary was in her campaign.

The Tories broke the election rules to stop Farage getting in here.

Its bizarre the Mackinlay was allowed to stay as our MP given the rules were broken

I didn't say that there weren't arrogant Brexiteers, I said that remain shouldn't have stooped to their level, it's what lost them the vote.

If remain wouldn't have employed sneering tactics they would have won, but the people at the helm were spiteful cunts.

Democracies have their weaknesses, as was recognised as far back as the 18th Century. One weakness is that is relatively easy for demagogues to sway the 'mob'. Once people start playing on your emotions, be wary. The chances are they are trying to con you.

Representative democracy just about works if voters understand their limitations and are prepared to leave complex issues to experts. Unfortunately, those days are gone, as every Jack thinks he knows everything about everything. Here's a clue - you don't. This is nothing to be ashamed of. I have no idea how to perform a heart operation, mend a jet engine or shoe a horse. It doesn't mean you are 'thick' if you don't understand how the EU works, for example. Maybe 1% of the population has a full understanding.

Does this sound elitist? Maybe it is. Is it elitist to say I don't want Dean off the estate drilling my teeth unless he has a qualification as a dentist?

Entropy suggests doing nothing does not bring stability. For example, the justice system is falling apart, do nothing and it just gets worse. Immigration needs real action to manage it properly, NHS waiting lists won’t solve themselves, AI will need regulating, etc etc. I just can’t see Starmer doing the necessary.
TBF, he is no worse than most PMs, we really do not produce them at the mo.

That’s fair. I do think he will tackle those issues but I do not expect him to do anything radical. We’ve had enough turmoil

I'm not sure to be honest, but like you say anything could happen after a GE.
Thing is, by appealing to the right of the party she puts herself at the forefront of that group. And that means leverage and power, with a possible return to any shadow cabinet.

That mate is all politics, I would argue less so in democracies. Democracies in general have less killing murdering bastards at their helm.

Populism is what it is, if Labour win the next GE it will be through populism. People imho who want power want power in reality, they want to be the boss.

It's not just opinion though is it. It's scientific fact proven in academic research.

Fraudsters often target elderly and cognitively impaired people. Just as the unofficial and official Brexit campaigns did.

Many statements told during the campaign by vote leave and are out outright lies or misleading.

See the interview about "350 million" of Boris Johnson by Tom Bradbury for an example of pressure selling techniques.

Do you mean the man who is now foreign secretary in a pro-brexit government?
In principle I guess that having Cameron in and Braverman out improves the intelligence level of what has to be the dumbest government and Cabinet this country has ever seen. For all his faults the guy has a lot more about him than the rest of them and has experience of high level government.

But how can it work to have one of the leading Remain figures representing this pro Brexit government, and how much credibility will he have on the the World stage?

Potentially this is a turning point in the Tory civil war as it is the first time they have stood up to the Brexit attack dogs. Look forward to seeing how the rabid Brexiteers react to this one, they are going to go mental, and maybe this is going to split the Tories.

I played operation as a kid, I can remember how to remove the broken heart without making the nose light up. Also funny elbow and Charlie’s horse are a speciality of mine ;)

Please No.

You're completely ignoring the arrogance and sneering nature of remain, if the people who voted leave were that stupid how the hell did the remain camp fail to convince them.

Calling someone a thick racist **** is not and never has been an effective selling technique.

There is a distinction between popularity and populism. 'Populism is a range of political stances that emphasize the idea of "the people" and often juxtapose this group with "the elite". It is frequently associated with anti-establishment and anti-political sentiment.'

I would put it differently. It is a deliberate policy of offering simplistic solutions - or slogans - to complex problems. Eg. 'Stop the Boats'. 'Get Brexit done.'

Of course all politicians want power. The question is, what do they want power for? Is it a positive or a negative reason? Are they in fact capable of doing what they say, or are they bullshitters? Most recent politicians have been bullshitters, and their motives have been sinister, not benign.

Labour almost invented modern jingoism, in other words bullshit.

It's Time for Real Change

Rebuilding Britain For The Many Not The Few

Britain Deserves Better New Labour, New Life for Britain

They all do it, the correct definition of populism is that it's a term used by the left wing of politics to demean the voters of right leaning politics and voters.
