Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 32 - threespires - Could have been a Contender (pg 472)

Not for this playlist, but to briefly revisit the last theme, and one from way back. Because I think it is worthy of a mention and at least a couple here might find it interesting.

On songs that sound similar, this one I would think is purely coincidental.

The Room, by Twilight Sad
June, by Idles, some 10 years later.

Both use not only the same hard beat, but also the minor drop. Both really powerful and brilliant songs, and I imagine the coincidence is just an inevitable outcome of trying to convey something moving and inherently dark. Bit of a courtesey warning on the second, deals with unpleasant and heavy.

Iowa - Dar Williams

I listened to the then playlist on Tuesday as I drove up to the game. After the last track I let the tracks continue into the recommendations and this is where I heard this song.

Had never heard (of) this lady before but will certainly listen to more of her stuff!

There's a blast from the past. Have a few of her albums, for some reason not touched them in ages.

She's one of the three singers on the first song I nominated for this playlist Cold Missouri Waters (along with Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell they did a one off album as Cry Cry Cry).

I think she's probably a bit too fey for many on here but she's fey and she knows it so I quite like her. Mortal City, the album that track is from is a good listen.

Ok on the bizarre combos front that's two of us who own Dar Williams and Idles wonder how many more it takes for the algorithms to start suggesting them to each others fan base!

I've got a couple of Lucy Kaplansky albums and one of Richard Shindell from way back. I thought I recognised his voice in your nominated song. I also have another track on another playlist from the Cry Cry Cry album...By Way of Sorrow, Lucy K on vocals.

I know Billy was speaking metaphorically but it is a region too

Billy Bragg - A New England

I already have a Memphis Spotify playlist given frequent customer visits required for work. It of course includes @Mancitydoogle's nomination of "Memphis in the Rain".

Next to that one, I'd choose this:

Darryl Worley - Messed Up in Memphis

(it used to be in Spotify, but unfortunately it currently is not, so the live version from Texas Hammer there will have to do, but I'm giving credit to Darryl whose song it is)

This song stays in my head more than most any other.

Couple that might not be on your ‘Memphis ‘ playlist
’Thars how I got to Memphis’ covered by lots of artists but the Buddy Miller is my favourite.
’Memphis in the Meantime’ John Hiatt

Given nobody is really volunteering for next week we can do three things.

- a joint open Christmas fortnight. nobody starts us off with 5, we just pop songs on as we feel, festive or seasonal, could be hits could be alternative (I'd imagine people skipping the hits if they have been heard lots). More informal, music still there to talk about and listen to, but nobody rrally has to feel any obligation or like their theme isn't as successful as others if being busy gets in the way.

- a two week break. Busy time and all that, nobody really jumping at doing one etc. Plus I think there will also be an album thread playlist (which in fairness will be smaller, circa 15 songs).

- I could put a theme forward. As above, bit alof a busy time and might fall flat, but I could make it more niche which might keep it smaller.

OB1 has also offered up going again, but has been also been polite to let others have their shot. I don't have an issue really, but just want to watch it doesnt turn into a small number on repeat, longer term.

I can do one. As you say busy time so can't guarantee I'll update the playlist every day next week but I'll try to do it as many days as I can.

That said if preference for joint open Christmas one am good with that too.

That sounds good. All depends on how people feel about Christmas. Let's put it to a vote. If you are sick of Christmas and don't want any more songs about it, like threespires post above. And we'll go with that playlist whatever the theme he sets.

If you want to hear what Christmas/seasonal songs this group would put forward, like this post.

I'm personally happy either way. Spires you obviously have your say too and are welcome to like your own post.
