See, here's my problem. Kalvin Phillips may or may not be a good footballer. His fellow professionals from other clubs rate him by the way. He may not be up to the standards required in what is certainly in the top three club teams in the world, and arguably at the very top. So be it.
But whether he perfoms well or poorly tonight, this will establish very little. He's in a team with only three recognised stalwarts in it — Akanji, Grealish and Stones. I just don't see what it will prove.

His biggest obstacle is overcoming Pep’s “I just dont see him in this team” position.

If he puts in a motm performance tonight he may go a long way to convincing Pep (and most of us to be honest).

it doesn't have to prove anything. he's getting a game in a meaningless tie to play a bit of football and give others a rest. no need to think any deeper than that?

He's still coming back to match fitness, I'd play him as long as the pitch isn't horrific and the opponent's not going to go flying in.

It’s obvious the writing is on the wall for Phillips but we still need cover for Rodri but if Phillips puts on a show tonight surely even Pep would take notice. Personally I’m not expecting much because every time I’ve seen him play he’s been crap but all the “experts” who really rate him can’t be wrong.

The only way it wouldn‘t be is if he shows he can imitate a prime Rodri performance.

The likelihood of that Is minuscule though.
