Always said that they will hang on until the last possible minute. They need an election like a hole in the head, as they say. They still have a huge majority of yes men who want to stay where they are. Barstewards. Just hoping something will turn up and the MM can go into publicity over drive; loads of money in the coffers from rich donors.

Surely they know they are going to lose, which means rishi will get the boot.
Therefore, with the party conference being in october, do they want him to lead that knowing he will be gone in a few weeks or do they want it to be a big event for their new leader?
Would need to work backwards from October however long it would take them to get the new guy in to give an idea of when the GE may be.

That's a sound argument, which is usually why May is a good time for elections. Perfect time for a re-brand during conference season.

The only slight fly in the ointment is that Sunak is the one who gets to unilaterally decide. He can be pressured by his party, but it would feel like an empty threat unless they're insane enough to depose yet another leader immediately prior to an election or lay down a VONC which wouldn't help his election chances either.

He holds the cards and all the rest of the Tories can really do is hope he agrees with them.

Can’t argue with Phil’s logic, however I think by the end of March Sunak’s election strategy will have defaulted to desperately hoping for a miracle over the summer when the polls don’t shift after the NI cut and the early March budget. If that miracle doesn’t happen it’s either wipeout in May or total wipeout in December following a summer of Tories endlessly repeating their greatest hits of mentioning Corbyn, vaccines and getting Brexit done over the summer whilst the horror stories of mortgage rises and pay cuts for millions keep coming.
