Finished it last night. My missus got visibly angry watching it. Don't know what it is more bewildering; the injustice that they're still to be officially exonerated, or that it's taken a glossy TV drama to make our establishment take real notice.

Little of note happened yesterday, the hearing was about disclosure-I've watched every day of the hearing and even I got bored.

@blueste41 everyone is entitled to an opinion and you feel I am acting all scouse, fair enough but....... this scandal has been going on for over 20 years and no one in Government has done anything about it. In 2015, 8 years ago it was headline news but died a death. 4 years ago the police started an investigation, now I know the Met are slow but we will all be dead by the time they make a decision. This current inquiry has been meandering along nicely without any political leader being accused of neglect. It is only when a TV programme is made that the shit hits the fan and the TV and tabloids are all over it. So forgive me for being cynical in thinking Sunak has bombed the Houthis to yet again take attention away from this disgraceful goverment backed miscarriage of justice. I just wonder why the rest of Europe aren't bombing them, don't they have Post Office scandals to cover up ?

Anyone can become a priest. It’s like any other job. You need to understand the recruitment process and then undergo the training course.

I knew the process a decade or so ago and could have become one even though I don’t believe in sky fairies.

I understood you were referring to the recruitment process: ‘getting a job’.

Most companies don’t recruit based on someone’s beliefs. Anyone saying they were joining most companies based on its enduring message to the wider world would be considered a nut job. Except maybe at Apple.

Thinking about it, for someone who’s a bit lazy, who wants a roof over their head, a modest but decent standard of living and a fairly respectable place in the community it’s a pretty good gig.

I’m pretty sure they can come and go as they please for most of their working week. Especially C of E clergy who probably only have one service a week.

A rural posting in particular is probably a bit of a breeze.

Bingo.

Not so much as it used to be, but there are worse jobs to have.

Rural priests may have 5+ churches to look after.

Sunday is one of the quietest days, bizarrely. Schools take up loads of time. A lot of priest roles come with being on the board of governors of schools.

My wife has 5 churches and is on 3 school’s board of governors.

Add in prepping for 2-3 funerals each week etc and the time does fly.

My old house round the corner, had two new next door neighbours move in a couple of years ago. Nice couple. Husband and wife. Bit boring, but very pleasant. Good neighbours. Often saw them walking their dog when I was on my way to the pub, but never saw them in there!

And one day my girlfriend met them, and said she thought they were Christians. Not in an especially pejorative way, but maybe not everyone would see it that way tbf. Hadn’t spotted it myself, but it sort of made sense when I thought about it.

A couple of days later I see the wife get out of her car, she’s wearing a dog collar! Tried to look nonchalant when I spoke to her, but I doubt I pulled it off!

Like all jobs, there are so many different personalities in priests. Some are better than others too.

I know one priest that hates funerals and will try and delegate every one in their parish!

That makes sense, of course it does. We all have things in our jobs that we don’t especially like, and what that is can differ from professional to professional based on their personality and strengths.
 
Its one thing Sunak bombing the Houthis to deflect attention from the scandal but gdm and Mr Tash are taking it to another level :-)

Yep and getting back on topic, Vennels will have been identified as a corporate priest destined for management, rather than a parish role, as she manifestky lacks the compassion for that.

Like all company ladders, the higher you go, the more politics you have to play. Being a Bishop means you are being a figurehead for that diocese alongside being the “manager” of all the priests and ordinands too.

Vennels would have been earmarked for a certain role, but will no doubt be overlooked now. I can’t see the church giving her any role in the public eye now.
