Mr Bates vs the Post Office

Yep and getting back on topic, Vennels will have been identified as a corporate priest destined for management, rather than a parish role, as she manifestky lacks the compassion for that.

Like all company ladders, the higher you go, the more politics you have to play. Being a Bishop means you are being a figurehead for that diocese alongside being the “manager” of all the priests and ordinands too.

Vennels would have been earmarked for a certain role, but will no doubt be overlooked now. I can’t see the church giving her any role in the public eye now.
What does being Bishop of London mean in terms of Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s?

They oversee the diocese of London, which includes the two biggest churches.

They will do specific services at them, but won’t be there regularly.

It‘s the third most senior position to hold in the C of E. They’ll be in the House of Lords and on all sorts of committees.

I think the juxtaposition of Vennell’s putative religious beliefs (and ambitions) and her conduct as CEO of the PO is absolutely on topic.
If you ever talk to people that go to church, their views on society are more old testament than new. Not much forgiveness and love for others.

I don’t go much as what I perceive a Christian should be and how they actually are don’t marry up.

Second being Bishop of York or Durham presumably?

I think it doesn't include the Abbey directly - isn't it a Royal Peculiar?

St Paul's is the base of the Bishop of London, and it directly controls the Cities of London and Westminster - not sure how far north it reaches before it meets St Albans.

South of the river is Southwark and Guildford.

Minsters and cathedrals are managed differently, so I’m not 100% sure how they work there. The seat is in St Paul’s though, so you could be right about the abbey.

You're definitely right about the cities though.

Twenty years it’s dragging on but all I hear are Labour names responsible for the scandal Sunak busy adding it to his electioneering portfolio

Heads should role it reminds me of a deliberate extortion racket prison for the culprits

Finished it last night. My missus got visibly angry watching it. Don't know what it is more bewildering; the injustice that they're still to be officially exonerated, or that it's taken a glossy TV drama to make our establishment take real notice.
Been following this debacle for a number of years & decided not to watch because I know it will fukin wind me up no end…..

Has anyone been arrested yet for this? It's all well and good having a hearing but what about actually punishing people for this?
Only two, both senior people at Fujitsu -Gareth Jenkins and Anne Chambers. They were before the judicial enquiry commenced, more arrests will follow but will have to wait until the hearing concludes and reports it's findings.

I noticed you’d posted before that you’d watched the thing pretty much all the way through. What have you made of the standard of cross examination on display?

I thought the bald guy from the other day was pretty impressive. Don’t think aggressive cross examination would play well in that setting.

They have been fantastic, as you say it's not their position to be aggressive they ask questions on behalf of the enquiry to establish "what went wrong". Jason Beer KC is particularly good, he probes and probes to make his point. TBH though the documents presented speak the truth for themselves.
You will find the lawyers that represent the subpostmsters question in a much more aggressive accusatory manor.

Just checked Beer’s profile out. Seriously impressive. Guys like that are on another planet compared to the vast majority of the profession they operate in. It’s like the difference between the PL and League 1. Think that about sums it up.

Aggressive is rarely a good look when cross examining. Think it’s occasionally justified. When the witness is a professional (such as Old Bill) and they won’t answer the question being one such example.
