An Important Message For Cyclists

I cycle most days and claim to be one of the "Good Guys". I have seen many cyclists doing stupid things such as running red lights, pedestrian crossings, swinging in and out of traffic, riding on pavements and endangering passengers and more. If they get them selves injured, then I have absolutely no sympathy for them and, quite rightly, should be held to account for their actions.
Similarly, I have been knocked off my back 4 times over the last 2 years. By a car leaving a parking space without indicating, by a lorry knocking my bike into the kerb, by a car leaving a side road with the driver on the 'phone and clipped by a car when we were both turning left. Only once did the driver stop to assist.
Some cretins on both sides but cyclists nearly always come off worse.

I wish they passed a law requiring all cyclists to wear a suitable helmet. I now expect numerous hilarious pictures of "suitable helmets"!

How does a cyclist not wearing a helmet affect you?

Seems an odd thing to be annoyed about
Do wear a helmet, don’t wear lycra, and don’t go through red lights. Apparently if all cyclists did these things then all drivers would be calm and courteous.

I agree that cyclists should abide by the rules of the road but why does them risking only their own lives (when it IS only their own lives) make car drivers so angry? Seems like every driver has an inner Clarkson they need to channel.

Cycle helmets are only designed to protect the head from low velocity impacts such as a static fall onto pavement.

They will do sweet FA if you get snotted by a vehicle from behind.

I would imagine the type of cyclist who behaves badly on the road is highly likely to behave just as badly when driving a car.
This, people behave well and badly not categories of road user. Cyclists who behave badly are less dangerous to others but probably more dangerous to themselves than motorists who behave badly.

That's because modern cars are essentially an armchair, insulated from the outside world with a built in entertainment system and a multitude of driver distractions.

100% correct.

However, I never knew car drivers were so altruistic towards their fellow two-wheeled road users.

Maybe all that honking and close passing is just them trying to communicate.

I use this same argument whenever my daughters bollocks me for wearing my flat cap when out riding. If a double-decker corporation bus runs over my head, I'd rather it killed me than leave me in a vegetive state.
No doubt helmets will become compulsory before long.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by behaving badly. In the example video just posted it could be they were filtering to the front of the queue, which they are allowed to do if it’s safe, but then perhaps one decides “sod it, nothing coming” so makes the decision to jump the light, and the others follow. I wouldn’t think that any of them would be thinking of doing likewise in a vehicle. More likely they are wearing clips and trying to avoid unclipping, I see it all the time.
