General refuse collection being less frequent is a good thing for me. It makes people recycle better.

It’s 3 weekly in my area and it works fine for most.

Fair enough, although my faith in the good people in inner city Birmingham taking this approach isn't particularly high, judging by the endless piles of shit already existing in some areas.

I think their biggest issue is “equal pay” case where some roles, such as grave diggers were paid a bonus that roles of same grade, such as dinner ladies, weren’t. The claimants successfully argued that roles predominantly performed by men had bonuses whereas those performed by women were not - in reality it was probably a structural issue aimed at bumping up pay for roles, however good the intention this has has cost BCC something like £1bn with another ~£700m outstanding along with other monthly liabilities. Best part of £2bn is a big hole in anyone’s budget.

Flats are always different when it comes to bin collections. They need a different strategy, but doesn’t stop other houses from 3 weekly collections.

I only say that as I remember how grim it got when I lived in my flat and the weekly bin collection went fortnightly- there were black binbags piled high, vermin everywhere. They were Housing Association flats and we threatened to stop paying rent. The Housing Association renegotiated with the council and we went back to weekly collection.
Wasn’t it Eric Pickles or some other top Tory who claimed it’s every Englishman’s right to have a weekly bin collection?
Just the small matter of funding it...

It does need people to change their habits. I was sceptical of the 3 weekly cycle, but it does work.

Guess in flats, they’re not “your bins” and just chuck random stuff in as you need. Food waste does need to be collected more frequently.

Pickles probably meant well, but his view is outdated now as people can live fine with fewer collections.
