England v Brazil | Friendly | Match Thread

What formation shape would they do different out of interest ?

we might attack more but soon as we lose and exit a tournament then no one cares and the manager gets crucified
Dont take this the wrong way, but all your above statement tells me and everyone on this forum is that you really do know very little about football if you don't understand how a manager like Pep could get this England team playing much much better and increase our chances significantly of winning something over Southgate.

I just find the way England play to be utterly negative and boring. Is that the fault of the players, or something else?

International football is a drop off from what we get week in week out in the PL and CL, and I think for the most part, the majority of international football is boring due to the fact the players just don't play with each other every week and the coaches are more often than not finished at club level or punts from the international youth setups. Argentina won the world cup with a rookie manager for example who's managerial claim to fame was managing the Argentina U20's.

I think as fans what we ask for at a bare minimum is selecting to play the players that are most in-form and utilize our best players in the most efficient way possible.

Southgate fails with this because no way should Gallagher be playing in midfield, Maguire in central defence, Henderson in the squad, playing Foden at right-wing, selecting Rashford as one of his go to off the bench options.

His in-game tactics are also that of a Championship manager.

Mancini made him look like he was an assistant manager who got the job for a day in that Euro final in 2021.

International football.
Was Brazil amazing to watch ?

Watch other international games, often slow and boring, players not used to playing with each other etc.
Especially friendlies and pre knockout stage

Pep need times to makes the players in national team playing what he wants and even it took him six years to get champions league for us.

I said champions league not premier league because it's pretty much similar as world cup or euro because they both a knockout tournament.

Pep is king on winning title in league format hence why we always wins in league in consecutive seasons but i doubt he will do it consistently in knockout format that rellied on draw and luck to win the knockout competitions like world cup or euro.

I agree with most of what you said, except Bellingham, who I actually thought was quite poor, especially his attitude (constantly moaning and quite selfish throughout), and Gordon, who looked below the level required, though, it was his debut in a bad selection from Southgate.

And I think you are being slightly harsh on Foden, who was quite clearly well ahead of everyone on the pitch, including Bellingham, who were always looking for the safe sideways and backward pass or, in the case of Sir Bellend, trying to run through the entire Brazil team for a wonder goal.

Gordon looked to make things happen and had a couple of efforts on goal, and his pressing was good. Bellingham at least got on the ball consistently and tried to run the game. He was generally at the centre of our attacking play.

We see Foden consistently get on the ball and create chances for City. He is often ignored in an England shirt but he needs to find a way of getting on the ball more. Other than the flick I can't think of much he did other than lose the ball last night, I wouldn't rate that as a good performance when we know what he is capable of.

Simple question, who would you put your money on to win something, Southgate or Pep? If you reply with some long ramble and not name one, we will all know the reason why.

Just watched it.
Fucking load of boring negative shite again from Waistgate,
Sooner he fucks off to the swamp the better.
Clueless.
Even his post match interview sent me into a semi paralysis state.
He saw positives apparently.
The fact he suggested Chilwell played well speaks volumes. He could have just not commented on what was clearly a dire individual performance to say he had a good game is laughable.

Pep but even someone like him needs a time and will not be an immediate impact for national team atleast in early days.

Even thats only part of the story.

Boro were a pretty decent side when he took over. They got into Europe two years running before Southgate and had just been in the UEFA cup final. They were a mainstay in the premier league for a good decade, had some good players etc.

Southgate took over, made them worse and worse until he took them down and they never recovered. They've been in the premier league once since, for one season.

That's the entirety of his club managerial career and he's managing the national team. Staggering really when you think about it.
Let’s hope that Jim isn’t

Literally a penalty shoot out away from winning a tournament, can’t get any closer to winning that that. He took us further than any manager we’ve had since 1966.

It’s so easy to just point at any manager and say ‘he won’t win us anything ‘ because the likelihood is we wont. Regardless who we have in the dugout.
1. We have no devine right regardless of how good the players are.
2. Because it’s tournament football, anyone can knock out anyone, only takes a mistake, or a bad ref decision and that’s it you’re out.

Man City didn’t win champions league for ages and they have the best manager and best players in the world. Football is a fickle game. Hence I’d rather just enjoy it and ignore the nonsense and outrage should we dare to lose.
A penalty shootout he lost by selecting the wrong takers. Only went to penalties because he over saw a pathetic second half display in which he showed zero ability to influence or manage a game.

I’d somewhat agree but can’t be proven until he’s in the hotseat. Capello and Sven won trophies galore before taking England job and both ‘failed’

It’s easy to just say ‘Pep would make us play better and win trophies’ but international football is just a different beast to PL football.
Pep had the best side in the world and how many attempts did it take for Man City to win champions league ?
Euros/World Cup is a similar format, it can often be out of the managers hands why a team gets knocked out. So many variables.
Unless we win a trophy the next manager has zero chance of pleasing regardless of who he picks, how we play, what formation etc

England looked like in a schoolboys trial game with too many players playing for themselves rather than the team. Southgate must take some blame. The lack of team structure became more apparent as more experienced players left the field starting with Walker. Hard to take anything from the game.

Brazil followed a simple game plan and stuck with it.

Agree watching international football is getting more like watching conference league level. Piss poor standard.

The only players from that England squad that would get into the City squad already play for City.

The pl is great because we can take players from all over the world so the standard is high. Just imagine the standard of the pl with just English players lol

Having watched from a far last night there a few glaring issues, left side of defence is utterly fucking shit and unfortunately there’s nothing in locker to move Slabhead and Chilwell on.

Bellingham might be very good but he’s got no restraint he’s just playing for himself from what I see when he plays for England and it’s not helping.

Gallagher is just an energetic donkey he’d be suspended by the third game in a tournament.

Phil just gets bypassed and is allowing it he’s a senior player now and needs to start giving it out a little.

No point in going in two footed on Southgate as we all know (cockney Mark apart) that he’s just not got the chops for it.

U can't win big international games if you have players on the pitch unable to make simple passes and keep the ball. England desperately need a number 6. Rice is an 8 he's an emergency 6 but so much better playing at 8 he's not a player to keep the ball moving dictate play or be a deep lying playmaker. You can't have players like Connor Gallagher in your team how many times did he just kick the ball out of play last night? He ran around like a headless chicken and brazil just played around him. I'm all for pressing but it has to be done in the right times and zones. Chilwell is also woeful in possession and defending same as Maguire. So as much as people say this is the best England team/squad in 50 years they are still miles off being a great international team. And don't even get me on to the clown picking the team and tactics!!! The quicker he rocks up at the old toilet the better hopefully before the euros.
