England v Brazil | Friendly | Match Thread

Simple question, who would you put your money on to win something, Southgate or Pep? If you reply with some long ramble and not name one, we will all know the reason why.

Pep but even someone like him needs a time and will not be an immediate impact for national team atleast in early days.

Even thats only part of the story.

Boro were a pretty decent side when he took over. They got into Europe two years running before Southgate and had just been in the UEFA cup final. They were a mainstay in the premier league for a good decade, had some good players etc.

Southgate took over, made them worse and worse until he took them down and they never recovered. They've been in the premier league once since, for one season.

That's the entirety of his club managerial career and he's managing the national team. Staggering really when you think about it.
Let’s hope that Jim isn’t

Literally a penalty shoot out away from winning a tournament, can’t get any closer to winning that that. He took us further than any manager we’ve had since 1966.

It’s so easy to just point at any manager and say ‘he won’t win us anything ‘ because the likelihood is we wont. Regardless who we have in the dugout.
1. We have no devine right regardless of how good the players are.
2. Because it’s tournament football, anyone can knock out anyone, only takes a mistake, or a bad ref decision and that’s it you’re out.

Man City didn’t win champions league for ages and they have the best manager and best players in the world. Football is a fickle game. Hence I’d rather just enjoy it and ignore the nonsense and outrage should we dare to lose.
A penalty shootout he lost by selecting the wrong takers. Only went to penalties because he over saw a pathetic second half display in which he showed zero ability to influence or manage a game.

Dont take this the wrong way, but all your above statement tells me and everyone on this forum is that you really do know very little about football if you don't understand how a manager like Pep could get this England team playing much much better and increase our chances significantly of winning something over Southgate.

I’d somewhat agree but can’t be proven until he’s in the hotseat. Capello and Sven won trophies galore before taking England job and both ‘failed’

It’s easy to just say ‘Pep would make us play better and win trophies’ but international football is just a different beast to PL football.
Pep had the best side in the world and how many attempts did it take for Man City to win champions league ?
Euros/World Cup is a similar format, it can often be out of the managers hands why a team gets knocked out. So many variables.
Unless we win a trophy the next manager has zero chance of pleasing regardless of who he picks, how we play, what formation etc

England looked like in a schoolboys trial game with too many players playing for themselves rather than the team. Southgate must take some blame. The lack of team structure became more apparent as more experienced players left the field starting with Walker. Hard to take anything from the game.

Brazil followed a simple game plan and stuck with it.

International football.
Was Brazil amazing to watch ?

Watch other international games, often slow and boring, players not used to playing with each other etc.
Especially friendlies and pre knockout stage

Agree watching international football is getting more like watching conference league level. Piss poor standard.

The only players from that England squad that would get into the City squad already play for City.

The pl is great because we can take players from all over the world so the standard is high. Just imagine the standard of the pl with just English players lol

Having watched from a far last night there a few glaring issues, left side of defence is utterly fucking shit and unfortunately there’s nothing in locker to move Slabhead and Chilwell on.

Bellingham might be very good but he’s got no restraint he’s just playing for himself from what I see when he plays for England and it’s not helping.

Gallagher is just an energetic donkey he’d be suspended by the third game in a tournament.

Phil just gets bypassed and is allowing it he’s a senior player now and needs to start giving it out a little.

No point in going in two footed on Southgate as we all know (cockney Mark apart) that he’s just not got the chops for it.

U can't win big international games if you have players on the pitch unable to make simple passes and keep the ball. England desperately need a number 6. Rice is an 8 he's an emergency 6 but so much better playing at 8 he's not a player to keep the ball moving dictate play or be a deep lying playmaker. You can't have players like Connor Gallagher in your team how many times did he just kick the ball out of play last night? He ran around like a headless chicken and brazil just played around him. I'm all for pressing but it has to be done in the right times and zones. Chilwell is also woeful in possession and defending same as Maguire. So as much as people say this is the best England team/squad in 50 years they are still miles off being a great international team. And don't even get me on to the clown picking the team and tactics!!! The quicker he rocks up at the old toilet the better hopefully before the euros.
