Enjoying the brilliant Alyson Rudds column in the Sunday Times.

Subject of her article is autographs but as per usual it’s a fawning love letter to LFC.

Really puts that Martin Samuel in the shade with his ridiculous well thought out non biased views.
She even said "it means more"...

I'm always intrigued by journalistic claims about the nature of our, or any other, fan base. What are their research parameters, their methodology, their sample size, in fact, any empirical evidence at all that lends credibility to their assertions.

If a journalist wants to make claims like these, fine, but at least state that they are based solely on their opinion as supporters/propagandists of other clubs rather than presenting them as established facts.
The kind of third rate hack that writes the kind of bullshine frequently scribing about the magnificence of MUFC and the paltry support of MCFC wouldn't have a fraction of a fuckin' idea of what research parameters were all about. let alone sample size!

The easiest way to avoid criticism for such specious, unempirical and absurd claims is to not to make them in the first place.

I rarely comment on this thread - too much paranoia, particularly about things like Ally McCoist's commentary, but I've just caught up on the Jonathan Liew article.

It's sheer poison. And clever. What City fan could read this

"There is a school of thought out there that City is a club driven by grudges and enmities, fuelled by antagonism and spoiling for scraps at any opportunity. Perhaps this is true at a boardroom level, or on the wild frontiers of the internet, where City fans remain unrivalled in their capacity to nurture conspiracy theories and illusory slights, desperate to be hated."

and not scream that that's the sort of crap that shows that the "slights" are not "illusory"!

John Crace though really is funny (in a piece about Spurs fans not wanting to hand Arsenal the title) and the matchday thread suggests there's some truth in this:

"City are also a hard team to love these days. They and their supporters have changed from the perennial underdogs of 15 years ago. They have become bloated on the success bought with petrodollars. They have lost their charm. Become just another footballing mega corp. They now think they deserve what they have got. Sad, really."

I don't think it is true, but I'm sure part of wanting more and more success is because every achievement is diminished by "they're not a great team until ..." and they don't like it when we then do it.

Such bitterness.
For context:
Jonathnn Leiw is a Liverpool fan.
John Crace is a Spurs fan.
Nick Hopkins is, I believe a United fan, though I can't absolutely confirm it.

The perpetrators of these claims totally believe them, G. Any criticism that befalls the claim is wafted away as being 'bitter-based'! We can see through them as I can see through the lounge window of Ewing Towers five mins after the window cleaner has been.

Winter kept saying....."have they broke any rules?".

Custis says "No, but they circumnavigated it, a rule brought in to protect young vulnerable African players from being exploited"

Winter: "So you are suggesting this young white14 year old, guided by wealthy American parents is being exploited?"

Custis: "No, no no but the rules are the rules"!

Winter again: "Did they break any?"

Conversation is then swiftly shifted to the 115!
Custis like his brother is another old school anti Arab prick.

Sorry, but it's bollocks. "They now think they deserve what they have got. Sad, really."

How can you not read that and think "absolute bollocks". Which fanbase has ever said after winning anything "we don't deserve it, we are not worthy".

And what is it with all these journalists explaining to everybody how we feel / should feel about winning. Seriously, they can all fuck off. A Spurs fan telling us how we should feel about winning anything at all. What the fuck would he know? The ****.

Sorry, rant over. Otherwise a good post.
When I see many of these 40/50 y.o. scribblers dressed like teenagers on a night out in town, I find it hard to take anything these whoppers say seriously. In another age they would have been unemployable and living off charity.

"Longest serving champions in the history of English football, excluding the suspension due to the second world war,

You'll never sing that!"

I suspect we won't, either. Shame ....
We're the longest serving champions in the league
Apart from the second world war (suspension!)
We're the longest serving champions
Longest serving champions
Coz we've gone and won number fuckin FOUR!

Found it

Couple of interesting takes from that article. Firstly is the following extract from Liew’s comments about Agnew:
There’s an incendiary word you could posit to describe all this, but I’m not going to use it.
Actually a fucking spineless thing to write. Say what you’re going to say, don’t fucking allude to it. Fucking shithouse.

Secondy is the expression that Agnew deployed to describe Liew in response:
Couldn’t agree more.
