Think it will be a 3 as he’ll try to protect Konsa as much as he can.

The fact it unlocks Phil centrally is probably a pure fluke and not part of his thinking.

To be fair, before the last World Cup everyone was badgering Southgate to stop playing 3 at the back and switch to 4-3-3 or whatever, which he did....Now people want to revert back because we've been shite in the formation everyone was crying out for a couple of years ago.

That said, I do think the players now would carry out this formation with 3 at the back better than the team with Phillips, Mount etc.

With Shaw not being fit, there's not a lot of experienced alternatives. Only the Nottingham river could step in, but you'd have the same issue, a right footer playing at LB. Dunk at LB; I don't think so. Looking at the bench, there's not that many defenders on there; river, Shaw and Dunk.

Agree but if he’s playing foden outwide I would not play Phil either. Gordon could offer more on that role.

People only want it because they want an actual left footed player in the backline somewhere and saka is the only option because Southgate inexplicably decided not to bring a left footed defender.
