Paris 2024 Olympics Thread - 11th August (pg 430)

Honestly wish they’d bring back tug-of-war to the Olympics. That would be an absolutely insane event now.

Much more of a legitimate sport than golf, or a few others currently included.

Have never actually watched a second of their coverage live, only clips shared on here and by mates largely in disgust or taking the piss, but I understand they are essentially being wound up now, and are headed to a digital-only model in a far, far more limited capacity.

I just thought their take on Kenyan distance running would be even more ridiculous than the Eurosport’s non-athletics panel.
Yeah, agreed on GB News.

The Eurosport one is interesting, because although it became a semi-joking discussion, Adam Blythe the cyclist had a decent point behind what he was saying, and the para-athlete who was on with the two ex-cyclists, actually agreed. He was talking as well about some of the runners having loose fitting vests instead of close fitting lycra. We’ve seen lots of advances in fabrics etc in cycling and swimming but seemingly not in athletics where (perhaps understandably), it all seems to have been about shoe technology.

That morning show they have on 7-8am each day with Orla is one I’d recommend.

Doesn't Rugby League have something similar, that Grand Final thing? Isn't it the most prestigious trophy in domestic RL? The best team over the year won't necessarily win it, the best team on the night will.
I think so yes, although I don’t follow rugby league so not sure

Fascinating chat in the last 10 mins of the morning show on Eurosport, where the non-athletics panel were questioning why 100m runners don’t pay more attention to aerodynamics, just like cyclists do, bearing in mind the speeds they reach.
I think the last runner to give this serious attention was Freeman at the Sydney Olympics.

On the show there was mention of wearing swim caps, padded bras to help on the dip, and running in speedos. High quality insight that.
Running in Speedos! They may as well copy the Ancient Greek Olympics:

“SF of Death” for the men’s 100m about to run.
Lived up to expectations. Cluster of times was the tightest of any 100m SF or heat thus far, and the fastest 100m SF of any Olympics ever.

Feel bad for the other sprinters that had to be in it, knowing they would have likely got automatic qualification had they been in a different SF.

I can’t do any sport now, but before things progressed as they have, I went golfing (full 18) three times over the course of 20 years and did not enjoy it any of the times. Perhaps my mind would have changed if I had gotten older but still had some mobility, but I think I just didn’t enjoy the inactivity and waiting. Now that I am forced in to inactivity, the last thing I want to do is watch others experiencing it.
Like me, I can’t do any sport now. If I hadn’t got seriously ill back in 2014 I’m sure I’d be doing something.

One for the pub trivia loving Americans (or just Handegg aficionados) : Vashti Cunningham, who is competing for the Women’s High Jump podium is the daughter of (and is coached by) NFL great QB Randall Cunningham.

That’s a great video with a great sound track. I had no idea Great Britain were world champions. Let’s get it as an Olympic sport! Look at the size of the GB coach, he should be anchoring!

The first video is very interesting, as well, showing when it was still in the Olympics.

Genuinely would love a return for it, especially as I reckon GB would have a decent chance of winning gold.
