Hugo Viana | Director of Football

Big job and one that he must be aware of. Building a new team of winners is going to be a big ask.

He needs to get his first signing off to a good start.

Big changes coming over the next few season.

Hoping we’ll be making big signings way before he starts. Need Txiki to buy a top player in January - one that keeps KDB & Rodri fighting for their places.

He’s going to need his knack of finding bargains given how many players we’re going to need to replace.

Was hoping that the day Txiki was leaving he would leave on a high, handing over a squad as good as ever that would give any replacement some time to settle in and some time to adjust, settle in, and see how things work around here. Instead it looks like we are asking Viana, with little to no experience from a top5 league, to start off with a major rebuild. I sure hope he is up for it.

He'll need to come hit the ground running. Ample opportunity for improvement overall. Really need to get legs in the midfield.

Got a big job ahead of him.

We’ve got a lot of 30+ year olds who are on the decline, with the players in the squad who may look to replace them being absolutely nowhere near as good as these ageing players were in their prime or others who’ve left us over the last four years.

That’s what you get when you have a 5 year net spend of £-70m; a gradual decline.
Well said, money in the bank means fuck all in football terms. It's like the Grealish transfer made us embarrassed to spend big. We need to show every club out there that we are the top dogs and start to act a little like Madrid when it comes to transfers.

His job is huge as it is, Pep needs to let us know one way or another.

It will still be a major factor for players we want to acquire.

It was for Haaland.
They'll want more than that I reckon - we know he'll be here for a year or two, but some players might be nervous about after that.

Pep, for all his absolute godlike ability, does have favourites too

I can’t understand the discontent on here, absolute madness
We are 1 point behind Liverpool and 5 clear of Arsenal and have horrendous injuries and just lost our first PL game in almost a year
Can you honestly not see why we didn’t spend in the Summer - seriously !
APT rules and a stop to our sponsorship deals - effects income
PL charges potential fine etc etc - effects outgoings
Uncertainty about the managers future
Money being spent on the ground
Yet we still compete - look at the trophies we have won.
The club will get it right

Financially speaking this is nonsense; there's hundreds if millions available to spend based on our cash generated though operations and the sales of Alvarez and multiple youth team players.

The money spent on the ground is via debt funding.

Nonsense - so you know what the sponsorship deal the PL via APT blocked was worth do you ?
If found guilty of some or all the charges you know the financial penalty do you ?
Glad you’re so well informed

He'll walk into a squad with Ederson, Gvardiol, Ake, Dias, Akanji, Lewis, Rodri, Grealish, Foden, Doku, and Haaland as a baseline with Echeverri and Perrone out on loan. I'm sure he's grateful.

I'm a chartered accountant and I know that the club generates an average of c£100m cash from operations annually.

Any financial penalty from the charges is an unknown but notwithstanding that, there is serious money to spend.

Well you're a finance guy surely you can understand the potential need to be cautious this season ?
Income has been effected has it not ( APT deal blocked )
Expenditure is unknown
Plus numerous other factors that could impact the decision to spend or not
Perhaps come January we are clear re ATP and PL charges and will spend big then - who knows
Lastly we are 1 point off the top with horrendous injuries and we are very comfortable in Europe so it’s not all doom and gloom

I don’t think he’s got that hard of a job to be honest. City are fucking loaded after all the years of having a positive net spend. RB, DM/CM, AM, cheap striker and I would even target a CB. This squad doesn’t need major surgery, although next summer is critical to find the right players.

Correct. The squad is magnificent, albeit with a few weaknesses. It’s hardly a rebuild the likes of which United are going to have to undertake, and despite what people think on here, it doesn’t all have to be done in one transfer window.
The biggest problem for me this summer is no break for the squad, as they go into this Club World Cup and then pretty much straight into the season.

Depends on who the next manager is

I seriously hope Pep stays for another year, if he leaves this summer with a new DoF coming in, the CWC and doubts about one or two player’s futures, it’s going to be a difficult start for whoever the new manager is.
One more year, get this particularly difficult summer out ofthe way, give the new DoF twelve months to settle in, and hopefully all the furore surrounding the charges has all calmed down.

Then we can start our new era.
