Sporting CP (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

Fernandinho as captain a few years back called a meeting with all the players (when we were going through this sort of period) he have them all what for and they all had it out with each other.

I hope there was fireworks tonight between the players and staff, It shows they give a fuck.

'We could have scored more'

FT: Sporting 4-1 Man City

Sporting forward Viktor Gyokeres to Uefa: "It's always nice to score and even better to score a hat-trick. Most important was to win the game so it was a brilliant night for us.

"We knew it was going to be tough and we didn't start off well. We knew they would give us space and we could have scored more than four to be fair. They could have scored more as well.

"You need to raise your level when you play better opponents. I tried to keep doing what I've been doing."

On manager Ruben Amorim leaving for Manchester United: "We will miss him a lot. We've done amazing things together. We will miss him and the other guys in the staff who will leave. We have to look forward and attack the next challenge ahead of us."

There is the crucial part. "We knew they would give us space."

So did we Viktor, so did we.....

A lot are being panicky. Clearly wasn't interested in the Carabou, you could tell that be the substitutions made and I think that was the right decision because we already have a packed schedule without that and the injuries so I don't even count that one.

Bournemouth was understandable given the injuries, they don't concede many and we could have taken a point in the end, We didn't, but that will happen from time to time.

Tonight again the injuries told, it would have been a different game if Haaland had scored and all three penalties were a bit soft in my opinion. Would any of them be given in the PL? Their second one was no worse than the pull back in Savinho in the first half. But this is a blip primarily caused by injuries, we haven't become a bad team overnight, no more than that.
The first one was definitely a penalty and the second one is more likely to be given in a European game than not

The blame lies on both guardiol and Nunes both gave the ball away and needed to be calmer as neither player was going to score from where they were fouled

We don’t have anyone like that now, coming from Walker wouldn’t be the same. The only one who now carries the right level of respect is Rodri

First half an hour was possibly the most ‘us’ we’ve looked all season. Wingers high and wide, sharp passing, good pressing and that numerical superiority in midfield. Should have been three or four up at half time and they couldn’t live with us.

But fuck me, how vulnerable do we look on the break? Every time they got over the halfway line it looked like we were going to concede and I can’t remember the last time we looked all over the place to that degree. Probably Pellegrini’s last season.

Anyone’s guess as to how we sort it before January when we surely, surely get the chequebook out. Stones would be the most obvious answer on paper but can’t stay fit to save his life. From a technical point of view I’d say Gvardiol but then we’re taking our best defender out of defence.

Grealish is the answer for me. Gives us the control we desperately need, rarely loses the ball and no stranger to winning the odd free kick. Him next to Kovacic and Rico dropping in is by no means perfect but if we carry on like this until January we’re probably out of the title race, bearing in mind we’ve got Tottenham, Liverpool and Villa within four weeks.
I think spending is the answer for once.
Too busy trying to show the world how much money we make, when fuck them, lets upset them by spending on quality

Fair enough but to say he doesn’t deserve his place is another thing entirely.
As i said originally without his goals we’d be fucked.
The rest of the team isn’t scoring enough or creating enough so it’s very easy for the opposition to nullify our only real goal scoring threat.
Our problem is much deeper than Haaland and because of a poor transfer window right now he’s our only option to score goals.
What goals.
Hes not scoring.

Each to their own but can't help feel he's being made a scapegoat rather unfairly. Of all our attacking players first half I thought he was the best by far, bar the odd flick from Foden.

He fell out it second half and didn't play well on the right but everyone was terrible and he was no worse than any.
I would say he looked half decent when they were shit!
They really were shit for 30 minutes, all over the place at the back and the keeper looked garbage but we didn't capitalise.

When they turned it around he did his usual disappearing act.

We lost 4-1 today to a far inferior team. We had the chances first half to finish the game and then went completely absent 2nd half.

Nunes has been ok the last few games but in reality contributes little going forward and gave away a stupid penalty. Gvardiol managed to give away an even more stupid penalty. Haaland then misses a penalty. Ederson lets one in through his legs. A comedy of errors. Maybe just one of those games but seems a hint of a deeper malaise.

Bernardo off form and Lewis, while a tidy enough player, weakens us defensively but adds little going forward. Akanji looks unfit and Savinho does some nice stuff before wasting it. Foden was the only one to really play well throughout, though I though Kovacic was also decent first half.

Hard to see where we go from here but I think a bit of a rethink is required.

Can we please stop saying Nunes is ok and making excuses for him.

The man is absolutely wank. How can there be so many of you who just won’t have it?.

But some fans don't understand football is about 2 teams and you can lose
Maybe we are just in a bad run of form, Missing key players and struggling to win go hand in hand,

Also, you start to panic and feel even more pressure from the stands, In the game tonight you could see it after we kept missing you knew its was coming,

Really is this the end of that golden era ? I don't think it is, Pep has big questions to answer about the future and whether he will be at the club for the next rebuild or is he ready to leave and let somebody else have the money

But as the song goes

Que sera, sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que sera, sera

What will be, will be
You really need to re-think that song. Or perhaps you weren't kept in at the swamp in 2010 after the League Cup semi-final second leg.

I agree with some of this but "Relentless games" is not true. Liverpool have played exactly the same amount of games. They are not in the same position as us. They do not have the same injuries as us. Nor the same ability to commit defensive suicide every game at least 3 times.
Dont know the numbers and not suggesting we play more than others, but games do seem more relentless with inernationals too when players are out and results are not good.

Especially as some injuries have come on international duty.

Hate seeing our players in the England squad now, used to be thrilled for em back in the day, but footballs way more "complicated" as a fan nowadays.

Just hope Peps got a new plan.

Bravo/ so what the fuck is he doing crossing the white line?
He is likely to be fit enough to play due to the circumstances, like Laporte do for us, but the injury is affecting him that is obvious So yeah bravo to him what would the alternative be? Play someone even less fit or another kid?

I turned it off at the second goal, I was so angry with our finishing in that first half, I'm actually sick of it, week in week out. We fucking battered them for 40 minutes, and because we can't score, despite our dominance, get what we deserve.

Our finishing, is and has been for 3 seasons, basically shite, we regularly score 1 from 20 chances, then people on here blame the defence (which is far from perfect), even blaming a 19 year old on his his first start.

Our attacking players can fuck off tonight, they should apologise to the young CB for being so incompetent.
