Evidence yet again that democracy is a great system…but only in the hands of a well educated population.

Democracy is much wider than a voting system.

It also requires civic society - a shared set of values that are respected by the people within it. An information system that is pluralistic and respects facts. An independent judiciary.

No democracy is perfect, least of all in the UK.

But of these have already been stretched to breaking point in the US, and it seems very likely a further, more systematic attack on democracy in the wider sense is coming.

It sort of reminds me of before WW2, how they wouldn’t get involved in outside wars etc, until they got attacked, the short sightedness of this will happen with Ukraine and possibly Taiwan. By then it will be too late, China will overtake them and they already have fingers in Africa etc.

I don't think that's true, Starmer will still be in charge in 5 years, as long as he grows the economy. That's his challenge.

It was for me. I liked Harris, she came across as genuine and intelligent. I can't say that for Trump.

It was extortionary and for a man of his age, his stamina was incredible and his ability to judge and know his audience.

What do you expect? The man was fighting for his life. There was only one way to avoid jail and this was it, if it was me I would be on the campaign trail 22 hours a day

I suppose the only positives are the as it's not a close result we won't be subjected to weeks of legal wrangling, and accusations of vote rigging or russian interference. Also, the proud boys, maga etc will be celebrating rather than lynching, looting and burning. The willingness of the west to fight to the last Ukrainian will finally have to be concluded and the dying can hopefully stop in that hopeless cause.
I'd like to think the democrats can use their last few weeks to do something to restrain netanyahu, and this will hopefully give them time to reflect, rebuild and come back with an actual vision in 4 years.
Also, trumps age and Americas history of killing presidents are probably against him.

But I think I’m done here. Footy and music don’t seem that important suddenly. I won’t sleep tonight.

I deleted my Twitter account already and as much as I like it here, and other places, I have more important things to focus on. Like making sure my kid and his partner are okay and safe (rather an activist, that one) and moving some money around as I expect some serious volatility will roil the markets.

I still think it’s a six-standard deviation event that he destroys the nation’s democracy but protection from the possibility is now an important and necessary hedge — especially if the GOP takes the House. My family’s safety and financial well-being is too important.

As I said — before when he had another term to think about and at least some experienced people to rein him in, I knew it would suck, but I didn’t worry. Now? All bets are off. No one competent will work with him and anyone who tries will not control him. I’ve no idea how serious his inflammatory rhetoric is, because he’s a constant liar. I still cannot believe after everything — especially January 6 — this man wins the popular vote. It’s almost not even real.

But what this means for both the next four years and the future — the possibility set is far wider than it was, and includes some awful potential futures.

Best to protect against that chance.

Good luck whatever you do. He is a liar and hopefully some of his rhetoric was playing to the gallery. So many challenges facing the world and yet we get this (I really cant find the word - I typed clown but he is too dangerous for that). Hopefully once you have taken action you will still post on here. Its a relatively safe, sane place. Take care.
