US Presidential Election, Nov 5th 2024

To some degree that’s true, but a lot of these jobs basically pay slave wages. If you’ve got a family or could get more from benefits why would you bother?
Isn't that the issue though? Surely you shouldn't be able to earn more sat on your arse on benefits than earning minimum wage or better.

Your minimum wage job, you can work overtime, you can progress, you can move companies to a better paid job. Stay on benefits and where you go from there.

Not sure I'd call minimum wage slave wages either. We pay just above and it's well in excess of £20k a year, more if you work weekends or nights. Big rise next April as well.

As a woman, It feels incredibly sad and lonely this morning. You all may laugh about it, and I can’t believe I’m sharing this on a sports forum, but the feeling of having no bodily autonomy is horrifying.
They will have to come over to Europe for a few months 'Holiday', no one will suspect a thing.

you think people will feel financially better off under Trump these next few years ?
What these individuals are feeling, more than anything else, is the decline of western hegemony. Weak growth and mass migration made necessary by an inexorably ageing population. I guess it’s possible to ameliorate these things by pulling certain levers but the fundamentals are unchanged. I fear it’s a tsunami that will overwhelm most developed countries in the course of the next generation and will lead to increasingly radical and desperate solutions that will ultimately have little effect.

The sad thing here is nearly 45% Of women have voted for him. Absolutely extraordinary.
I wonder if it will be worth it when women they know die. I am sure it feels hysterical to many, but I live in a state where many women have children after 35, which means increasing risk of complications. I have experienced this myself and same with many of my friends.

You know everything’s gone off the rails when you find the most compassion on a sports forum.

As he and his team have said they'll be putting 25% levy on imports from places like the UK... I don't get anyone in this country being very happy at his win.
And I'm sure we'll put matching tariffs in place so we'll pay more for American goods.

Not disputing that but I am disputing the 'get rid of all the immigrants and give jobs to British people' line. Immigration is one of the backbones of a good, stable economy.

Yes these jobs should pay more but people aren't willing to then pay the increased cost at the checkout.

Fully aware of that. I haven’t actually been living under a rock for four years.

Price inflation of consumer goods has rocketed though and seriously hurt people in the wallet, particularly working class families. Rightly or wrongly (and in this case I agree, largely wrongly) the incumbent government will ALWAYS get a kicking for it. It’s politics 1.01.

People felt better off under Trump, and that’s the beginning and end of it. The rest is noise.
I think I agree mostly with what you're saying but for me it's not necessarily that people felt better off under Trump, it's that people think they felt better off under Trump. It's 4 years ago and people forget. It's a big part of why politics goes in cycles, everyone gets fed up at governments and hark back to days which may not be as they remember.
