Elon Musk reshared a post sharing fake photographs encouraging far right activists to turn up and riot 2 miles from where a live a couple of months ago. Apologies if me wanting to leave his platform makes me a woke a fucker or an imbecile.
 
I haven’t been on it for ages, but towards the end, I found Twitter awful for anything football related. It used to be good for things like getting real-time videos of controversial incidents. But the prospect of ever having any sort of discussion on there was long gone. It was just full of people who’ve clearly never been to a game parroting the same tired ‘jokes’ they’d heard someone else say. Honestly about a third of the content was just Messi and Ronaldo fanboys somehow shoehorning them into any discussion.

Having said that, I did enjoy the annual meltdown from African and Middle Eastern fans whenever the club put their rainbow flag on their profile.

Between the bots, the hatred and the bigotry there’s already enough reasons to get rid of Twitter. Last week I accidentally seen an image of the Edinburgh decapitated head on there. That was finally straw for me.

Add to the fact that it’s owned by an edgy, self gratifying child I’d much rather spend my time on a different platform.

I quit Twitter a couple of years ago and don't really miss it.
I get all the City news and updates I need on here. I also use Facebook to keep an eye on new releases and live dates from bands I like, and for updates on Parkruns I intend to attend.
Other than that, I don't need any more social media in my life. If I want to interact with other people, I'll go to the pub.

You can't use the platform and expect it to be a level playing field because it isn't. Since Musk's takeover, he's given undue prominence to people who pay him to use it, promoting their replies and their posts over non-paying users. As I said in the previous post in this thread, he suppresses external links, so content creators find it much harder to get their work seen by both their audience and a potential new audience. He has also made it so much easier for false information - both malicious and mistaken - to be spread, and indeed spreads it himself in support of his own political ideology.

Previously, you'd have been right - block or ignore what you don't like, engage with what you do. But now that isn't enough to avoid what you want to avoid. It's you bringing a knife to a gunfight and Musk bringing a battalion.

Since he's so big on people exorcising their right to free speech, he'll understand people choosing to no longer use his platform in exchange for another that behaves how they want it to.

As for it all being about 'wokeness', I struggle to understand what people mean when they criticise 'woke ideology'. As far as I can tell, being woke means not being racist, sexist, homophobic, whatever, and actually engaging with people in good faith and in a pleasant manner.

Leave his to his thoughts. It’s exactly why the change is needed. He can continue to be radicalised by the algorithm and porn bots.

I appreciate you’ve come at this with common sense here, and I agree with so much of this.

It’s going to be very interesting. Trump’s initial statements since election have said people will have a right to social media that has no influence from algorithms. If Trump and musk deliver that it will be a sea change… and it’s not what musk has given us so far. But it also wasn’t what any other platform offered either. Jack Dorsey was as guilty as anyone and Zuckerberg is now admitting he’s messed it up on Facebook.

And regarding “wokeness” it also touches on someone’s ability to have a reasoned discussion on these issues, for either side of them without having to be shadow banned.

Discussion and hate speech are not the same thing so don’t take that as me advocating for free rein to harass. I recently witnessed a woke mob harass someone to suicide based on nothing more than “a feeling he was a bad dude” and it’s not a topic for here but it was left leaning folk going after him. Ruined his career in a day whilst sat on their sofas and it resulted in suicide.

So this is a city thing, I’m asking everyone to stay right where they stand. Disagree with people, fight your corner there. As long as you do it politely then discourse wins.

Running to an echo chamber hurts everyone.

But it's not as simple as that is it? It's perhaps worth stressing that the term originated in the 1930's when it simply described an awareness of social and political issues affecting African Americans. Since then, it's meaning has broadened to include all social inequalities. In recent years, however, woke has become a pejorative term more often than not deployed to attack those with left-leaning political views. While it could be argued that the word woke has largely become meaningless on both sides of the political divide, the right have managed to redefine the term in the public consciousness so it can be used as a stick with which to beat people. Such a reductive application is only too apparent in your comment.
 
Bluesky is not just a fad.. There's enough accounts/ city chatter on there to not even consider going back to X/twitter if you are like most of us and find it toxic.

The platform is basically identical to original twitter, except the folks who converse with me can spell, and I'm not being inundated with a bunch of right-wing, inbred, mouth-breathing idiots, posting misinformation. It's ... Eden!
