Linux?

most Linux based distros absolutely blow away Windows now and they have done for many years. I don't dual boot, I just run Arch or Kubuntu.
Blow away is an understatement. It is more like obliterattion. Was using Mandriva 15 years ago. I was running circles around Windows users. The KDE package was just ahead of its time then. I had an edge. Was on dual boot with windows7 and Madriva.

I started with Mandrake with KDE in 2001ish but then it was discontinued and I didn't like Red Hat.

Hard to believe someone could improve on KDE but Cinnamon did it for me. I guess I'm one of those users who really likes Linux if it can be made to use like WIndows 7 graphically.. and Cinnamon desktop just nailed it.

It's almost like I don't even wanna argue over what linux someone uses.. as long as I can use a Cinnamon flavor to it. Hell even Debian has a Cinnamon option now and ofcourse there's LMDE.

I am looking at Arch at the mo.
Cupla questions if that's OK.
1. How did u install it, i.e. thru CLI (from Arch web site .iso) or Arch GUI site (ALG)?
2. Which Desktop Environment do u use?

1. Through the terminal. Its not as hard as it sounds and Arch Wiki (the single greatest resource for all Arch stuff) has a guide.
2. I use KDE on X11.

Ta for info. Ended up using ALG, piss easy, got latest stable version & defaults to KDE plasma :-)
I'm still trying to get used to the 'Arch' way of doing things ;-(
One more question, probably a long shot, have you used archiso to create image files and/or, on different *nix plaforms, xorriso?

Seems to be numerous problems with the recent 24.04 ubuntu system upgrade. I use neon but the probs affect other ubuntu based distros as well.

I upgraded 2 machines last week, both had 'inbuilt' software missing. 1st noticed it when 'fdisk' was nowhere to be found!
Also, 1 machine was dual-boot (DOH!s) and couldn't find any devices. Fixed that, but couldn't mount DOH!s drive. Can still boot into it tho', don't ask ;-).

Checking, over the last wk, my advice would be to give it a miss and check out ur distro's forums.

PS What's this ads stuff ubuntu are involved in?
What planet are you from and is their air there?

You've never heard of the planet Ubuntu? It's in the Boötes constellation obviously, which is paired with the Microsoft Constellation. Hence the term "dual boot".

Although more commercial, Ubuntu works pretty much as is with limited requirement for faffing around with configuration. Debian needs a bit more tinkering, but ultimately more customisable. It really depends on what you want to do with it.

Oh I use LMDE..

So I get to use Debian with a Linux Mint distro and Cinnamon desktop. I haven't had the troubles of either Ubuntu commercialization or Debian barebones.

If you feel curious.. here:

Ubuntu was a bit of a pain in the arse for me as I struggled to get my wireless chip to connect to my router, along with numerous other hardware issues. I've used mint before, and I didn't have any major problems with it. I'll give LMDE a whirl when I get the opportunity.

Does anyone use Bazzite or Fedora??

I love LMDE but I keep a windows 10 partition for games. With support ending this October, I'm wondering if I can finally ditch windows forever.

Most of my games are on Steam anyways so I should be just fine with Proton.

So Fedora/ Bazzite users.. speak up.. how has your experience been??

Used Fedora for years, every upgrade has gone well.
Steam with proton works well, Lutris works well.
You can also look at Gloriouseggroll who does some custom version of proton and wine.

Dual boot windows 11 and Linus Mint it does everything I want it to do. Anyone wanting to dive in and learn Mint is the distro I would start with.

For anyone who isn't a gamer Linux is by far the superior choice IMHO.

Thanks to both of you.

I really wanted to ditch Windows as Windows 10 End of Life is here and I don't want to be bugged to use OneNote and OneDrive constantly.

And it took me about a month to get everything working exactly as I wanted and I'm there.

Basically you can't go wrong with any linux that fits you.. and both of your suggestions are correct. (I tried both)

I put LM on the wife's computer. For myself I went with Fedora but I had a few problems with nvidia drivers. Then I found a hidden gem in Ultramarine linux.

It's Fedora based, heck it is a refined version of fedora with added drivers that work from the get go. (best part is you don't even have to reinstall it.. you can migrate from fedora to it directly..)

I did it and holy smokes.. everything works. It's stable, fast, I can game, I can setup home networks, I can save my camera photos, I can edit them in GIMP.. like literally everything works.

I had a very good experience with your recommended two but I found a hidden gem in Ultramarine linux.

Good luck mate, just another couple of billion to convert and Microsoft will be dead in the water :)

I have a conspiracy theory..

Microsoft pays NVIDIA to not make good drivers for linux so they can continue their monopoly but AMD is very happy to get market share there.

And Steam seems to have done the heavy lifting and like all of my games work within Steam Proton compatibility mode.

Think my next GFX card will be an AMD one..

I'm not a vax conspiracy nutter.. I am vaccinated.. I like Bill Gates but I do not like monopolies and being forced on One Drive/ One Note.

Always AMD for me mate, cheaper and once you get down to it a lot more bang for your buck.
